Position Highlights
The Academic Coach will meet individually with students referred from specific programs, academic colleges, institutional initiatives to develop comprehensive educational plans for student academic success. This position will design and deliver educational services and programs that align with best practices in retention. In addition to meeting individually with students, Academic Coaches will teach SAS100AX, a two-unit hybrid course, with in-person meetings and asynchronous work. It provides evidence-based learning strategies to first-year students to make their studying more effective and efficient.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Holistically support students through one-on-one meetings who are referred to THINK TANK Academic Coaches through Schedule for Success, Academic Recovery, and students participate in THINK TANK’s Academic Coaching fee-based program.
  • Teach multiple sections of SAS100AX, a success strategies course designed to support students who are concurrently enrolled in MATH 100. This includes leading class sessions, assessing student work, assisting students, and meeting one on one with students.
  • Work with Undergraduate Teaching Assistants, who will help facilitate classes and assist with grading and administration.
  • Work with Peer Academic Coaches, who also meet one on one with students and lead academic skills workshops.
  • Develop, monitor, evaluate and adjust individualized learning plans for students on their various rosters (Academic Recovery, Schedule for Success, and fee-based Academic Coaching).
  • Identify, instruct and monitor the use of essential academic strategies for students during one-on-one meetings as well as within the classroom.
  • Contribute to the curriculum for the SAS 100AX course. This includes understanding the first-year student experience, designing relevant course modules, assessing student work, and providing resources to assist students according to the Instructional Team standards.
  • Create engaging educational materials for one-on-one student meetings
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records from standing appointments and within the SAS 100AX class that can assist in program reporting and assessment.
  • Understand, incorporate, and direct students to appropriate university resources, policies, and professionals to assist students in reaching their educational goals.
  • Develop rapport and productive relationships with students by creating welcoming environments and implementing coaching strategies for students to grow and gain new skills.
  • Commit to making students’ learning success the central concern of relationships with them.
  • Work with supervisor and other staff to ensure educational services are delivered in an efficient, effective manner and streamlined for students.
  • Deliver specialized student services such as workshops and presentations for target populations and work with academic colleges, academic advisors, and campus departments.
  • Participate in research goals of department through program development, implementation, evaluation, and modification.
  • Regularly communicate the progress, outcomes, and direction of work to supervisor.
  • Make recommendations concerning improvement of programs and services.
  • Support divisional student success efforts through participation in a variety of department activities and committee work.
  • Support department through participation in a variety of activities and committee work.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Manager of Academic Coaching Services.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in implementing and facilitating a student success program that combines learning strategies, academic study skills, and student development theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and high degree of openness to new approaches and new ideas.
  • Willingness to connect students to THINK TANK services, program components, and university resources.
  • Ability to establish a supportive relationship with students.
  • Understanding of and commitment to best practices for creating an environment sensitive to student diversity that promotes inclusive educational excellence.
  • Experience in coordinating and developing learning support services.
  • Experience with instructional delivery in academic support courses at the university or high school level.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and ethical principles in working with students.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required; AND 1 year of relevant work experience may be required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work or related field.
