Talent Search Academic Specialist - Jackson County

Description

Summary:
The Talent Search Academic Specialist is responsible for delivering academic, career, and STEM curriculum and services to low-income, first-generation students in grades 6-12. The Academic Specialist will report to the TRi O Program Coordinator and work with a team of other Academic Specialists serving the Jackson County School Districts.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic advising and intervention, financial aid and financial literacy advising, career counseling and STEM education
Maintain an annual caseload of Talent Search students
Coordinate the recruitment and selection of eligible student participants under the program admissions process; assure that all grant guidelines regarding eligibility are met
Design intervention strategies to increase academic performance (quarterly progress reports, academic skills development, etc.)

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):

Qualified applicants will have a bachelor’s degree (preferred) in education, counseling, higher education, social services, or related field.
Candidates should have experience working with underrepresented populations.
Familiarity with current knowledge of TRi O programs and working with low-income, first-generation students is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Coordinate program events and activities (workshops, campus visits, tutoring, and a 6-week summer camp)
Facilitate completion of applications to postsecondary institutions, financial aid, and scholarships
Document and record students need for services, academic support, and verification of income, and first-generation status
Maintain timely and accurate student records including contact logs, case notes, and files
