About Questacon
Questacon is Australia’s National Science & Technology Centre. We harness imagination and wonderment to make science fun and relevant for all. Our vision is for Australians to be inspired by science and technology and the opportunities it creates for the future.
Questacon’s Visitor Experience team provides a fun and welcoming environment for visitors to our iconic Questacon Centre in Canberra. We deliver outstanding science communication and customer service with the aim of increasing visitor engagement and connection with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The team is responsible for:
- ensuring a safe, accessible, positive, and inclusive environment for all
- demonstrating the value and fun in STEM engagement and exploration
- effectively operating all visitor service points throughout the Questacon Centre
- maintaining excellent records and standard operating procedures.
The opportunity
This role provides the opportunity to build a strong and flexible team through efficient rostering, planned recruiting, and delivering ongoing staff training. You will gain experience in delivering staff development opportunities and engaging communication across a large team comprised mostly of casual employees.

What you will do
Working consistently with the expectations for an APS4 in the APS Work Level Standards, the Rostering and Administration Officer is responsible for:
- Delivering weekly rosters and daily rosters for Questacon Centre-based staff including, but not limited to, Visitor Experiences, Learning Programs, and Questacon Volunteers, adjusting for busy periods and special events as required.
- Support team leaders in calculating staffing costs and required Full Time Equivalent staffing levels for annual rostering.
- Deliver routine staff training and assessment.
- Assist with the recruitment and onboarding of new Gallery Assistants (APS1.3).
- Oversee staff databases, ensuring all staff maintain WWVP registration, first aid certificates, mandatory training and exhibit/program specific training as required.
- Monitor hours worked by employees to ensure employees are working within the guidelines of the Enterprise Agreement.
- Facilitate communication with casual employees through notices, alerts and newsletters.
- Maintain and update content on the Questacon Webpage for daily shows and events.
- In conjunction with team leaders and coordinators, maintain visitation and satisfaction databases for monthly and quarterly reporting purposes.
- Organise volunteer reimbursement and parking for volunteers via an online system according to the volunteers’ roster.
- Other administrative duties as required.
Eligibility
You will be required to:
- hold or be able to obtain Baseline security clearances, and maintain clearance at this level
- hold or be able to obtain a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 and maintain this registration for the duration of employment
- pass a national police check
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

The department currently offers flexible work opportunities for many roles; however, this position requires working from the Questacon Centre in Parkes, ACT.
