About the National AI Centre
At the National AI Centre (NAIC), we’re accelerating positive AI adoption and innovation that benefits business and community. This includes partnering with industry and the broader ecosystem to uplift Australia’s AI capability, to support SME success with AI, and to uplift the practice of safe and responsible AI. Our team is actively engaging with industry and the AI ecosystem to support the landing of priority initiatives and gathering perspectives to shape the government’s AI strategy.
The NAIC team leads several high profile initiatives such as Australia’s AI Month, the AI Leadership Summit, the Responsible AI Network, Australia’s AI Sprint, AI Industry Connections, the AI Industry Directory, and the development of the Voluntary AI Safety Standard. These initiatives together with regular industry reports, enable Australia’s businesses to take advantage of the AI opportunity in a safe and responsible way.

The NAIC is supported by the Technology and Digital Division. Across the division, we provide a flexible working environment which includes remote working options. For most roles, candidates do not need to be based in Canberra. The department has offices in most state and territory capitals. We are a flexible and supportive workplace and are open to part-time and job-sharing options for the positions. The opportunity

The National AI Centre has several EL2 roles, including Manager and Individual Contributor roles. Areas of potential focus cover Industry Growth and Responsible AI, and include:
  • Team and section leadership,
  • Strategic program development and ownership,
  • Collaborative engagements with industry and the AI ecosystem,
  • Establishment and convening of community programs and forums,
  • Convening experts to shape best practice guidance,
  • Development of standards for AI deployment and development,
  • Shaping AI policy and investments, and gaining associated buy-in and approvals

We are looking for people with strong backgrounds in areas of industry program leadership and delivery, AI and cloud technology, stakeholder engagement, standards development and procurement.
We are building a dynamic and diverse team, our ideal candidates will demonstrate some of the following capabilities:
  • Proven relationship skills and the ability to build rapport with stakeholders across industry and government, including the ability to anticipate their needs and work collaboratively
  • Have excellent conceptual and analytical skills and the ability to efficiently prepare materials for presentation to senior officials, forums and non-expert audiences
  • Work autonomously to complete tasks with limited or incomplete information
  • Apply professional judgement to make and communicate decisions on matters that may have a significant impact program or policy directions
  • Experience developing and delivering industry programs and initiatives
  • Understanding of AI, robotics or cloud technologies and the implementation paths for businesses
  • Provide leadership to your team by navigating a dynamic working environment, supporting staff to anticipate and establish priorities and support their learning development
We will work with new team members to build their subject-matter expertise in the division’s focus areas and provide opportunities to develop skills in industry engagement, designing policy, and developing and implementing programs.

What you will do

The National AI Centre works closely with industry to land programs and initiatives which support AI adoption and innovation across Australia’s businesses.
At the Executive Level 2, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks which could include:
  • Leading strategic initiative development, including working on new AI industry program proposals and applying AI policy in industry contexts
  • Working broadly across government stakeholders to shape National AI Centre strategy, approach and deliver aligned initiatives and outcomes
  • Contributing and convening expert AI advice and recommendations to shape AI policy and programs
  • Program design, implementation and evaluation for industry and ecosystem programs
  • Liaising, collaborating and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders to shape program and policy success
  • Identifying and navigating complex contexts, risks and sensitivities and providing balanced solutions to stakeholders
  • Preparing, reviewing and advising on complex briefing papers, Ministerial correspondence and discussion papers for presentation to senior staff and stakeholders
  • Contribute to strategic planning of agency wide objectives and contribute to the continuous improvement of workplace culture (Section Manager)
  • Leading a diverse team, setting strategic direction and being accountable for developing, coaching and mentoring staff (Section Manager)

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
