Welcome to the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department! Maricopa County parks offer visitors the best of the Sonoran Desert, from hiking on a barrier-free trail to horseback riding along a creek to testing your mountain biking skills and abilities on a competitive track.
At approximately 120,042 acres of parkland and 872 miles of trails, Maricopa County is home to one of the largest regional park systems in the nation. Currently, there are twelve parks in Maricopa County's regional park system. Each is unique and offers its visitors a wide variety of recreational opportunities.
In addition to the parkland, the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department oversees the Maricopa Trail, a 315-mile trail system that encircles the valley and links all of the regional parks together. We Require
- One year of experience in Parks and Recreation or the repair and maintenance field including, but not limited to, construction, landscaping, or forestry
- High School Diploma or GED
- A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
- Skid loader, compact excavator, or heavy equipment experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs (i.e., Excel, Word, and Outlook) and Internet use
- Proficiency with GIS/GPS software and mapping applications
- Trail maintenance or construction experience
Job Contributions
- Maintains and constructs park system trails utilizing Department standards
- Performs re-alignment and re-construction of old trail segment
- Inputs data for ERSI-GIS work order tracking and completion
- Assists with locating the final alignment of a trail to establish control points, gradients, and drainage
- Assists with conducting field studies to determine the design and layout of trails and trailheads, including land features such as soil, topography, vegetation, climate, wet areas, and hydrologic regimen
- Identifies and compiles database information to create maps and other trail plan documentation in response to the public involvement process
- Uses GIS data along with aerial photographs and compares them with topographical features and contour lines along with old maps, property records, land titles, property boundaries, and other reference materials to verify their identification accuracy
- Supports Parks department staff in completing duties

Working Conditions
- Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona Driver’s License
- Must obtain basic first aid, CPR, and ATV training and certifications within one year of hire
- Exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly
- Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards and noise and vibration
- Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware:
- Skid steer, compact excavator, trail dozer, tractor, side-by-side, ATV, trucks, trailers, hand tools, power tools, Microsoft Office programs, internet, and ERSI/GIS
Protective Equipment Required:
- Steel-toed boots, safety glasses, DOT helmet provided by County
