What You Will Be Doing
Join our team as we work to understand the complex bedrock geology of mineral-rich Interior Alaska through field-based geologic mapping and analytical research. You will contribute your geologic expertise to the group’s collaborative projects and pursue your own independent projects in conjunction with the broader group goals—in the field, in the office, and in the lab.
Mission and Culture
The mission of the DGGS Mineral Resources Section is “…to determine the potential of Alaskan land for production of metals and minerals…” (AS 41.08.020). We generate and publish new geologic datasets and information, including geologic maps, reports, geophysical surveys, geochemistry, and geochronology. Mining companies, regulatory agencies, scientific researchers, and the public use our reports and datasets to understand and explore Alaska’s geology and natural resources

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is based in the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys office in Fairbanks, Alaska. The nature of the geologic mapmaking process requires frequent interaction and collaboration with other members of the Mineral Resources Section and with the GIS, data management, and publications specialists at the DGGS Geologic Information Center. Possible part-time telework options may be discussed.
Summer fieldwork involves navigating and traversing remote, mountainous, and/or brushy areas of Alaska in all types of weather. Travel is by helicopter, small aircraft, all-terrain vehicle, and foot carrying a heavy backpack. Field geologists must be able to collect rock samples and record detailed and accurate geological observations using a GPS-enabled handheld tablet.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- A strong background in field-based geologic bedrock mapping using GIS applications to collect field data, especially in metamorphic and igneous provinces.
- Education and professional experience in one or more of the following geologic subdisciplines: economic geology, geochemistry, igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology, structural geology, and geochronology.
- Experience creating geologic maps or similar geologic products for publication using Arc GIS Pro, Arc Map, Arc GIS Online, Arc GIS Enterprise, or other GIS programs.
- Strong organizational skills specific to compiling, curating, synthesizing, and integrating various types of geologic data and the ability to clearly communicate those geologic findings in written reports and oral presentations.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and with other geologists in a collaborative environment on projects with variable timescales (weeks to years).

SPECIAL NOTICES
- This position requires geologic fieldwork in remote locations of Alaska, as a part of a 5-to-7-person team. Typically, there is a 4 to 8-week total commitment to summer fieldwork that can be completed 1 to 2 weeks at a time.
