DESCRIPTION
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a well-qualified Membrane Filtration Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in our Materials Separations and Analysis department reporting to the Project Investigator. You will perform laboratory-based research and development of polymer membrane and water filtration systems. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.
Postdoctoral Research Associates work independently, they are a strong asset to an established R&D team to achieve specific program goals on multiple projects within the same area of study. You will write scientific manuscripts for journal publication, project reports and proposals as well as preparing presentations of research results and presenting them at national/international conferences/workshops/meetings. Must maintain currency in relevant scientific literature, meet ES&H goals, demonstrate a strong commitment to safe laboratory practices, and perform all work in an environmentally safe and compliant manner.
Responsibilities Include:
- You will help develop nanofiltration systems for chemical processing, such as rare earth element (REE) separations and recycling and lithium-ion battery recycling.
- Perform laboratory-based filtration experiments to develop membrane-driven separation processes of salts in aqueous solutions, utilize concepts in chemistry and chemical engineering to optimize process conditions and work independently while operating within a larger team to achieve specific project deliverables.
- Maintain current in relevant scientific literature and participate in preparing reports, peer-reviewed publications and proposals.
- Represent the laboratory though program reviews and technical presentations at conferences.
- Meet ES&H goals, and demonstrate a strong commitment to safe laboratory practices, and performs all work in an environmentally safe and compliant manner.

- Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills (in English).
- Demonstrated experience developing membranes for the separation of salts in corrosive aqueous feed streams, which can include micro to nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, membrane distillation, or electrochemical processes.
Desired Requirements:
- Water filtration systems assembly and operation at laboratory to benchtop scale. These include knowledge of pressure, temperature, and p H (conductivity) of solutions and their systems controls for small-scale setups.
- Experience with polymer membranes and flow cells that use flat sheet geometries, spiral-wound, and hollow-fiber arrays.
- Metal extraction experience of transitional elements and lanthanides, especially in acidic feed streams.
- High-performance polymer experience with aqueous and organic solutions, membrane formation, and module setup and design.
- Microscale to bench scale sample preparation along with product isolation methods using a fume hood.
- Spectroscopic analyses using flame atomic adsorption analysis, NMR, FT-IR, Raman, UV-Vis, and thermal analyses.
Job Information:
- The target salary for this position is $96,900. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- You are required to show a demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
