Duties and Responsibilities
1. *Plans, organizes, and directs facilities support activities; schedules operations, assignments, usage, personnel. Serves as working supervisor to facilities crew and monitors their work quality, progress, and performance.
2. *Responds to maintenance work requests from HIMB faculty, staff, and students.
3. *Coordinates maintenance and building repairs based on institute needs; assures work requests from faculty and staff are addressed in a timely manner.
4. *Participates in the development of long-range goals and objectives for HIMB facilities.
5. *Responsible for knowing, recognizing, and complying with laws, policies, rules and regulations governing HIMB maintenance. Ensures that safety standards and rules are met and strictly followed in all activities, including but not limited to forklift operations, chipper operation, and respirator use.
6. *Improves safety procedures, provides technical advice and interpretations of safety codes and laws, makes recommendations, conducts inspections or audits, and assures compliance with Hawaii OSHA laws, and fire safety codes and standards.
7. *May be called upon day or night during the week and weekends to respond to emergencies, critical problems, and security breaches.
8. *During impending disasters, responsible for evacuation of facility, and implementation of measures to minimize damage, including the installation of storm shutters and operation of backup generator.
9. *In the absence of senior facilities manager, responsible for working with outside contractors to assure that lab renovations proceed and cause minimal disruption to the unit.
10. *Serves as secondary emergency response contact if there is a total loss of power or access to water to HIMB facilities.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, Administration, or a related field, and 3 year(s)of progressively responsible professional experience inbuilding maintenance, construction, facilities management, physical plant systems (infrastructure), mechanical production systems, and/or operations; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of building maintenance, construction, facilities management, physical plant systems (infrastructure), mechanical production systems, and/or operations, as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies.
3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with building maintenance, construction, facilities management, physical plant systems (infrastructure), mechanical production systems, and/or operations.
4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
8. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
9. Ability to execute and manage large maintenance or renovation projects from initiation to completion.
10. Ability to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner with a variety of facility users.
11. Ability to communicate well in English, both orally and in writing, and work well with others including researchers, staff, and students.
12. Ability to respond to off-hours emergencies and storm preparations.
13. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver's license (class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation, which meets position needs.
14. Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted or broken down in smaller weight loads.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Proven record of safety awareness and protocols in a marine research laboratory setting.
2. State approved boating safety course certificate.
3. First Aid/CPR certified.
4. Laboratory Safety certified.
5. Experience working with seawater and seawater systems.
