Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions):


    • Oversees the English language partner feature ("Interchange"), ensuring that a sufficient number of student interchanges are provided for all English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and other programs, events, and activities with international students.
    • Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and maintaining a pool of active interchanges hired through the UH Student Employment office.
    • Reviews, prepares and audits payroll documents for student interchanges, to ensure compliance with university, state, and federal hiring policies, procedures, regulations and laws.
    • Conducts training and workshops to the interchanges, schedule them for program events, activities, campus tours, and evaluate their performance.
    • Conducts orientation to new instructors regarding the role and the system of Interchange.
    • Communicates with program coordinators and instructors regarding interchange class assignments and attendance.
    • Coordinates add-on/optional program activities that involve Interchangers.
    • Collaborates with program coordinators and instructors to further develop the interchange program (e.g. develop training workshops, special activities).
  • Arrange tutoring sessions upon request.
    • Procures classrooms, prepare and coordinate classroom schedules.
    • Prepare and process documents for speakers and lectures.
    • Manage personnel action forms, such as the Form 6 including causal appointments, overloads, honoraria and WH-1 forms.
    • Provides administrative support by managing immediate and on-going program logistics and follow up on all related requisitions and paperwork according to UH procurement regulations.
  • Work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Professional Work Experience:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Second Language Studies or related field and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for international education; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of English as a Second Language (ESL) demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with ESL and hiring.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of second language and teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and use MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and Google Work Space.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to coordinate and manage logistics, pay attention to details, establish and maintain organized records.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in supervising other employees (such as student assistants).
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of UH hiring and fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Experience in recruitment, hiring and supervision of personnel.
  • Familiarity with International Programs’ operations.
  • Experience in working with a database.
  • Overseas/cross-cultural experience.
  • Fluency in Japanese, Korean, or Chinese.
  • Master’s degree in Second Language Studies or related fields* (*Related fields usually include Linguistics or Education)
