Primary objective
Develop and deliver policy and advice to Government, key client groups and the public on fishing tourism, recreational fishing, and
the sustainable management of aquatic resources and fisheries in the Northern Territory (NT).
Context statement
Functioning within a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team, this role is part of the Recreational Fishing Unit, operating with minimum
supervision to engage with the public, liaise with key stakeholders, and manage fishing tourism and recreational fishing projects,
programs and advisory committees. The Recreational Fishing Unit sits within the Wild harvest Fisheries team, and the role works
closely with the Senior Recreational Fishing Officer, other fisheries managers and relevant staff.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist with the development and delivery of policy, programs and strategic planning to effectively manage the NT's fish and
aquatic resources.
2. Assist with the development of advice, correspondences and briefings to the Director, Fisheries Advisory Committees, the
Minister, key client groups and other government organisations on recreational fishing and the management of fish and aquatic
resources.
3. Support partnerships and liaise with key client groups, government organisations and indigenous groups.
4. Coordinate and manage activities of specified projects to ensure operations are targeted towards achieving departmental,
government, and as appropriate key client group's objectives.
5. Provision of executive support to fishery committees which involves preparation of agendas, background papers, meeting
organisation, minute taking and following up recommendations of meetings.
6. Undertake extension, engagement and education activities to support the implementation of fisheries rules and frameworks.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Sound understanding of the principles and strategies used in the sustainable management of natural resources and Ecologically
Sustainable Development with ability to interpret and apply associated legislation.
2. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects and meet deadlines.
3. Demonstrated experience in negotiating, resolving conflict, liaising and cooperating with clients, community groups, and other
government organisations.
4. Experience in writing high level correspondence, briefings and reports.
5. Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision in a team environment showing a high level of self-motivation and
initiative.
6. Skills in the use of information technology systems and digital platforms relevant to the management of natural resources.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification or experience in fisheries or natural resource management.
