PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The Operations Planning Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining a high degree of engineering and technical expertise to ensure
critical advice and support is available to the Power System Controller. They are responsible for ensuring technical provisions related to Power System
Operations (security and reliability) are maintained across the regulated power systems of the Northern Territory, whilst ensuring the Northern
Territory Government’s objectives relating to renewable energy and industry reform are met. In addition, they play a key role in the strategic
decisions that drive the future investment required to meet the renewable energy target set by the Northern Territory Government.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The “WHAT” to be delivered
This role is accountable for:
- Providing effective leadership, direction, coaching, support and delegation to the Operations Planning team
- Ensure internal compliance to the non-real time functions defined within the System Control Technical Code, inclusive of transmission and
generation outage assessment and approval, Power System Event Investigation and Reporting and Audits relating to technical code
compliance and the compliance of new and existing connections.
- Provision of specialist technical advice regarding power system operations and system dynamics to support new connections.
- Proactively engage with System Participants in ensuring requirements relating to power system security and power system reliability are
met and maintained in an effective and efficient manner under a wide range of system conditions.
- Engage with internal stakeholders to ensure power system models used by System Control in various technical assessments are maintained
to a state where various technical studies are able to be undertaken to the precision and accuracy required.
- Ensure all relevant technical system studies are conducted as required to advise operational and strategic decisions.
Leadership:
- Acting under own initiative, be able to respond pro-actively in a changing and dynamic environment, be able to manage conflict and
ambiguity and the ability to manage upwards.
- Ability to make critical decisions in real-time during a major system wide event (like system black or during a cyclone).
- Create and maintain a high performing team (including investing in and building sustainable capabilities among employees, while increasing
engagement and job satisfaction) and ensure expectations for organisational performance are clearly communicated.
- Ability to manage upwards at Senior Management level and obtain support in an environment of conflicting priorities and perspectives.
- Provide oral and written advice and routine reporting where required to CEO / Government Relations / Board / Stakeholder Management.
- Create opportunities for collaboration and the sharing of information and resources.
Commercial:
- Preparation of budgets and other management plans for the Operations Planning Team.
- Assist in establishing performance targets and participate in business planning and strategy determinations.
