About the role
The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency is seeking a dedicated Coordinator to oversee the Custody Notification Service in Darwin, Northern Territory. As the Coordinator – Custody Notification Service, you will play a crucial role in ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in custody are provided with appropriate legal and welfare support.
What you’ll be doing
  • Manage the Custody Notification Service, a 24-hour legal advice and support phone line ensuring efficient and responsive operations
  • Provide immediate legal advice and referrals to Aboriginal people held in police custody
  • Coordinate the delivery of essential welfare services, including accessing medical care and connecting with family members
  • Liaise with police, courts, and other stakeholders to advocate for the rights and wellbeing of detainees
  • Maintain detailed records and prepare reports on the Custody Notification Service’s activities
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to continuously improve the service
  • Supervise and support a team of case workers to deliver high-quality client services
What we’re looking for
  • Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory with a minimum of 3 years post-admission experience in criminal law
  • An understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal children in the child protection and justice system
  • A demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their history and culture
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to work under pressure
  • Experience in effectively managing and developing a diverse team to deliver high-quality client services
Requirements
  • Ability to obtain a satisfactory “Working with Children Clearance” (Ochre Card) upon commencement
  • Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice
  • Ability and willingness to undertake shift work
