Technical Director


The Event Services Division (ESD) of Auxiliary Services is comprised of Sports Facilities, Strand Union Building Administration (SUB), Conference and Event Services (CES), and the Bobcat Ticket Office. The department’s mission is “Produce exceptional events in outstanding facilities.” These facilities are spread across the MSU campus and the division provides service to a wide variety of clientele and take prides in excellent customer service.

Duties and Responsibilities
Working in the Strand Union building and reporting to the SUB’s Director, the Technical Director serves on the management team; actively participates in the on-site management and coordination of events in the SUB and the Norm Asbjornsen Inspiration Hall; supervises and directs staff as needed to fulfill client requests; and manages and operates the SUB’s and the Inspiration Hall’s technical resources. Responsibilities include:
  • Liaison with potential clients and Conference and Event Services to best meet the client’s technical needs (lighting, audio visual, computer, room set-up design etc); creates related production sheets; and ensures that client’s expectations are met day of event.
  • Primary point of contact for clients; available for SUB events, Inspiration Hall events, and other events across campus both indoor and outdoor, as needed by other departments working with CES that require technical production set-ups; and troubleshoots and solves technical issues for clients.
  • Provides video streaming services to clients as requested. Setting up and monitoring video streams of events.
  • Performs regular maintenance and upkeep on audio visual, lighting, computer equipment and other miscellaneous related equipment.
  • Supervises (hires, trains, schedules, evaluates etc) 1 part-time Event Technician and up to 5 student staff. Will directs and train full time staff as needed.
  • Maintains inventory control.
  • Researches industry innovations and forecasts needs of departmental equipment systems; recommends systems improvements to the SUB management team; and acquires new equipment.
  • Acts in coordination with teammates on production and operations of events within the facilities and partners with Sports Facilities Technical Director, UIT, and outside vendors as needed.
  • Actively assists with room set-ups and turn-a-rounds for all types of events with the SUB spaces.
  • Maintains current industry knowledge of technical equipment and trends; and pursues and suggests trainings as needed.
  • And actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or certification(s) in electrical, information technology, engineering, technical theater or related fields plus progressively responsible experience in a technical related job working with operating, repairing, and maintaining electrical/electronics, mechanized, audio visual and/or telecom equipment or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience in problem solving/troubleshooting of electrical/electronics and mechanized systems.
  • Practical experience with sound and lighting for events.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience working in a multi-use building.
  • Experience supervising and/or training others.
  • Experience with A/V control system(s) such as Crestron or Extron.
  • Practical experience with sound and specialty lighting for large or high profile events.

  • Exercise good judgment and make consistent decisions.
  • Effectively operate work related equipment; problem solve, troubleshoot, and repair technical and operational equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
  • Preferably have working knowledge of production scheduling, lighting, video, sound, staging, rigging, and design elements.
  • Represent the department and its programs in a positive, professional, and courteous manner.

  • Will work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and occasional holidays as the school and event schedule demands.
  • Will occasionally trouble shoot outside of business hours for immediate situations as needed.
  • Occasionally will work outside and in inclement weather.

Physical Demands

  • Move about or remain stationary while working for long periods of time.
  • Move/transport items up to 30 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Push, pull, move up and down stairs, and maneuver through tight spaces.
  • Occasionally work at heights.
  • Wear safety gear as required.
