Lecturer of Psychology and Social Work

Department Information
This position is dually assigned to the Psychology and Social Work programs. The faculty will receive course assignments (50%) from the Department of Psychology and from the Department of Social Work (50%). Annual evaluations will be conducted by the Chair of the Department of Social Work in collaboration with the Chair of the Department of Psychology.

The Department of Psychology provides students with the tools necessary to develop critical and analytical skills to examine the human mind, brain, and behavior. Our undergraduate programs address a versatile background of the major areas within psychology, along with the opportunity to select courses to fit their personal interests. As a highly diverse program at CSU Pueblo, the field of psychology is enormous, with many subfields. Some areas pertain to animals, while others are focused on the behavior of humans. Other areas focus on abnormal behavior or complex social and emotional behavior, while the cognitive area focuses on how people perceive, learn, remember, and think. The programs provide students with a versatile background with many career and educational opportunities.

The Department of Social Work at Colorado State University Pueblo offers nationally accredited bachelor and master degree programs for students in Southwest Colorado. The Department of Social Work at CSU Pueblo prepares BSW generalist practitioners to engage in a global society across diverse systems of all sizes, including individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities with interventions grounded in scientific inquiry. Students will utilize an antiracist, anti-oppressive perspective to enhance life and dignity for all people in a rapidly changing world. Our social work program has been continuously accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) since 1982. CSWE is the premier organization for accreditation of social work programs.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses in the Bachelor of Social Work program, and two courses in the Bachelor’s level psychology program.

Description of Job
This non-tenure-track, nine-month position (with summer teaching possibly available) provides teaching, scholarship, and advising/service to the Departments of Psychology and Social Work on the main campus in Pueblo and satellite campus in Colorado Springs (approximately 35 miles from Pueblo). In particular, the position will serve as the instructor for the Campus Connections mentoring program in the Department of Social Work, which includes collaboration with community partners and recruitment of students and youth to participate in the program. This includes the standard teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester. The position reports directly to the Psychology and Social Work Department Chairs. Annual evaluations will be completed by the Social Work Department Chair in collaboration with the Psychology Department Chair. The position will teach half-time in the Psychology Department and half-time in the Social Work Department.

Primary Duties

  • Teaching Bachelor level psychology and BSW/MSW social work courses and advising students. This includes the standard teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester preparation of materials, syllabi, measuring student learning outcomes, ordering and using appropriate textbooks, preparing all methods of evaluation and grading the work submitted, monitoring attendance for compliance with university standards, and recording grades. Recruitment of students and youth for the Campus Connections courses, collaboration with local partner agencies. Participation in CSWE accreditation compliance activities and carrying an advising load comparable to others in the department, curricular updates and changes are included. The candidate must maintain office hours.
  • Building and maintaining a focused research agenda. Developing and implementing appropriate research studies, presenting results of this work at appropriate conferences, and publishing this work in discipline-appropriate, peer-reviewed publications.
Ancillary Duties
  • Attending Discover Day or Enrollment Extravaganzas, traveling to Colorado Springs for enrollment events, recruitment of students.
  • Service to the department, the college, the university, the community, and the profession through membership and leadership on various committees, both standing and ad hoc, consultation in various capacities, presenting educational in-services to entities, serving as a board member, and other such activities.

Salary Range:
$49,000 to $50,000 per nine-month academic year. Additional compensation may be available for summer teaching.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.A. or B.S. in Psychology with an M.S.W. from a CSWE-accredited institution
  • Understanding of DSM diagnosis and mental health treatments; understanding of social and psychological impacts on human development.
  • Experience teaching and managing a mentor program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of the Campus Connections mentoring program.
  • Experience teaching across the Psychology and Social Work curriculum with expertise in practice, policy, or research coursework
  • Evidence of ability to develop and modify curricula
  • Experience in a position requiring the ability to teach, mentor, and network with Mentoring Programs in Pueblo, the 10th Judicial Courts, teaching assistants, and social work interns.
  • Experience in a position involving recruitment of university students as mentors and community youth as mentees.
