The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 located in Juneau/Douglas or Ketchikan!

What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 for Southeast Alaska. This position will be located in Juneau\Douglas or Ketchikan, Alaska.

This Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 is needed for a variety of management and research projects throughout Southeast Alaska. This position will be providing data collection, data entry, field preparation, equipment management and address office needs such as issuing permits, sealing animals and answer questions from the public. This position will have extended field travel and significant time conducting low-level flying aerial surveys. This is an advanced-level position that requires independent judgment and creativity operating under the general direction of a supervisor.

The working conditions you can expect:
This Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 will be located in either Juneau\Douglas or Ketchikan, Alaska. Field work includes spending extended time in a coastal temperate rainforest, flying in small aircraft, boating, handling large mammals, collecting biological samples, and other data. The majority of time in town is spent interacting with the public, responding to wildlife calls, analyzing data, and writing reports. The Juneau/Douglas and Ketchikan office is shared with other divisions and organized in an open layout to promote collaboration and communication.
  • Requires travel within Alaska (up to 10 weeks each year).
Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following desired strengths (All of these traits must be documented in your resume and application. If you do not have experience with one or more of these traits listed below, simply say so:
  • Considerable knowledge of one or more Alaskan mammals including their behavior and habitats.
  • Experience using laboratory equipment for the purpose of practicing research.
  • Experience with coordinating field work such as procurement, managing equipment and supplies, and providing logistical support to the field crew.
  • Ability to design, adapt and apply physical and biological data collection techniques and diagnostic testing.
  • Ability to conduct aerial surveys while writing and working radio telemetry and GPS equipment.
  • Ability to design and format logs for data collection and perform initial analysis of data from observations. Also, make recommendations, including writing memorandums and correspondence.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in inclement weather conditions.

Special Note:
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Requires the use of firearms and safety training.
Must be able to obtain and maintain:
  • Wildlife Chemical Immobilization Certification (Controlled Substance Act; US Code Title 21; CFR 1300).
  • Wildlife Capture and Handling Certification (Animal Welfare Act; Title 7, chapter 54 section 2131-2157; CFR Title 9, chapter 1).
  • CPR and First Aid training
  • Requires the ability to pass firearms safety training and legally carry a firearm for wildlife safety.


Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, traveling by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs or chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are often full-time but may be seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.

The location of this position is currently in Juneau/Douglas. The position may be located in Ketchikan, dependent upon the location of the most qualified candidate.
