Location: One position to be based in any of the following locations: Anchorage, Chenega, Homer, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Seward, or Tatitlek, AK.
Reporting to the Domestic Violence Regional Coordinator, the Domestic Violence Tribal Advocate promotes non-violence in familial relationships, advocates for and ensures the safety of victims of violence, and provides training throughout the region on safety, mutual respect, and nonviolence. This is an integral member of Chugachmiut Behavioral Health Services and works collaboratively with other Behavioral Health Services staff to provide comprehensive, holistic, trauma and culturally informed domestic violence/sexual assault prevention, intervention, and recovery services. It is of utmost importance that the Domestic Violence Tribal Advocate ensures that all communications for which he/she is responsible, both written and verbal, meet the highest standards of confidentiality, accuracy, and professionalism.
A Domestic Violence Tribal Advocate works in diverse areas, initiating and providing prevention, intervention, and “postvention” for behavioral concerns arising from interpersonal violence. This position travels out to Prince William Sound on an average of twice per month and carries responsibility for assisting in the safety, recovery, and healing process for beneficiaries. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide culturally and professionally appropriate individual, family, and group advocacy-based counseling services.
- Provide appropriate and relevant referrals for ongoing care and support.
- Maintain close ties, participation (as possible), and open dialog with domestic violence shelters, SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) Teams, and other intervention professionals and agencies.
- Be knowledgeable in and able to provide distance advocacy sessions, support services, and crisis interventions using technological tools.
- Work collaboratively with other Behavioral and Health Services staff to provide comprehensive counseling services.
- Provide assessments of overall victim needs, treatment plans (where warranted), and referrals while ensuring a “no-blame” approach with victims of violence.
- Prepare and maintain confidential records and reports and adhere to governmental and organizational confidential policies.
- Remain current with all documentation (client records and agency reports) where necessary.
- Provide psycho-educational information for individuals, schools, and community groups on violence awareness, anti-bullying, etc., on an ongoing basis.
- Be able and willing to provide services and advocacy in various settings, including but not limited to schools, homes, State and Tribal Courts, or village-based clinics.
- Review domestic violence, sexual assault, mental health, and alcohol and drug abuse literature and remain current on evidence-based treatment information.
- Attend workshops, conferences, and other forms of training as necessary.
- Work with Social Services Director on all programmatic development matters and with Behavioral Health Director (supervisor) on issues of clinical development and regional needs.

- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- High School diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, or related field preferred.
- Two (2) years of work experience clearly demonstrates the ability to accomplish the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Experience in cross-cultural service delivery is preferred, with an additional preference for experience in service delivery in rural areas, with Alaska Native/American Indian people.
- State of Alaska licensure in the respective behavioral health field is a plus but is not required.
- Experience working with individuals struggling with addictions. Certification preferred.
- Two years’ progressive experience with domestic violence service provision and/or administration preferred.
- Familiarity with Alaska Native or Native American culture and customs.
Hours of work are between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. This is a part-time position working 22.5 hours per week and 1170 hours per year position. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol free and non-smoking environment.
