WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
Performs work identifying, collecting, preserving and analyzing evidence recovered in police investigations. Work also involves technical research, preparing reports and testifying in court. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Criminal Investigations Captain or designee.
A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:
  • Documents crime scenes by taken photos, writing notes, or videography and identifying the scene's dimensions.
  • Survey's crime scenes and identifies the location of items of evidence utilizing distance and angle measuring equipment and creates sketches and diagrams from data recovered.
  • Processes crime scenes and persons for latent print evidence.
  • Recovers and packages items of evidentiary value from crimes scenes, victims, witnesses, and suspects in a professional and legal manner while maintaining proper chain-of-custody.
  • Collects, processes, preserves, analyzes, and archives various forms of digital evidence extracted from various sources to include computers, laptops, cell phones, mp3 devices, video cameras, or any item with a form of digital data storage capability or access to the internet.
  • Consults with criminal investigators during police investigations to review and explain evidence findings.
  • Submits evidence to forensic laboratories during police investigations to review and explain evidence findings.
  • Acts as a liaison with other agencies such as forensic laboratories.
  • Testifies in court regarding evidence collection, investigation findings and methods used to recover findings.
  • Prepares forensic reports to include power point presentations, maps, charts as well as written documents produced during a police investigation.
  • Researches technical information related to processing of evidence.
  • Attends meetings related to assigned activities.
  • Maintains equipment, supplies and files.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Associate's degree in computer science, information technology, or computer forensics or a related field and 1-3 years of experience (moderate) in police investigations support capacity or an equivalent combination or education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Crime Scene Certification by the International Association of Identification within timeframe established by the Police Department.
Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) within timeframe established by the Police Department.

  • Knowledge of modern police identification techniques, police photography, human relations and local law enforcement practices, policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of the process for collecting, preserving, and archiving evidence.
  • General knowledge of methods and standards employed in forensic science.
  • General knowledge of the rules of evidence.
  • Ability to collect, extract and interpret evidence and information.
  • Ability to testify in court proceedings.
  • Ability to prepare professional written reports and documents.
  • Ability to work independently within time constraints.
  • Skill in the use of digital technology, including but not limited to: cell phones, text messages and email, phone records, computer hard drives, cloud storage, digital video, web site, social networking sites, tablets and laptops.
  • Skill in the use of computers and computer software.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and communicate oral and written directions.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform work with high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and a diverse community.
