JOB SUMMARY
The University of Connecticut Hartford Campus is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor 1 (P3). Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Student Services, the successful candidate will academically advise undergraduate students across all schools and colleges and support administrative support functions at the University’s Hartford Campus. The incumbent will work with a dynamic team of professional advisors and administrative staff across the University and support students in their academic and personal goals by promoting student-centered partnerships. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport and establish trust with first-generation students and students from diverse backgrounds. It is also an expectation that the incumbent advances the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, in every aspect of their work.
Centered on teaching, research, and service in and about the global city, the UConn Hartford campus serves a community of approximately 1600 students, including large first-generation (49%) and minoritized (50%) populations. The Hartford campus offers undergraduate classes in 36 departments and master's, doctoral, and certificate programs in four disciplines. Students can complete majors in English, Human Development and Family Sciences, Business Administration, Business Data Analytics, Psychological Sciences, Urban and Community Studies, Digital Marketing & Analytics, Financial Management, and Social Work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage a caseload of undergraduate students, providing individual, group, and drop-in advising services.
  • Provide one-on-one academic and personal advising to undergraduate students.
  • Advise students through the major selection process and help facilitate a culture of exploration and engagement across the campus community.
  • Serve as a resource regarding coursework and graduation requirements, policies and procedures, academic notice and dismissals, and provide guidance to students with academic difficulties.
  • Monitor student progress and proactively address challenges that may impact academic success or retention.
  • Assist in course planning, scheduling, and registration activities during the semester and new student orientation.
  • Serve as a resource for current and prospective students, parents, campus partners, and others regarding academic policies and programs.
  • Teach a section of UNIV 1800 within the First Year Experience program.
  • Design and participate in presentations, workshops, events, and outreach for students, parents, and the wider campus community.
  • Teach students to access campus resources such as tutoring, counseling, financial aid, and extracurricular opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate electronic notes and communications for future reference.
  • Assist colleagues in composing and maintaining advising websites, social media, and other communications materials.
  • Serve on campus or university committees.
  • Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years of experience in academic counseling or advising.
  • Demonstrated experience attending or working at a diverse urban college campus or high school.
  • Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support, OR advanced degree in a related field and one year of related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support.
  • Experience and knowledge supporting undergraduate students, including first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in a fast-paced, dynamic working environment in a student services setting.
  • Demonstrated experience researching and resolving problems efficiently, effectively, and independently.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
