Assistant Professor, Tenure-track in Space Physics

Applications are invited from qualified individuals for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Space Physics at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics.

The University of Saskatchewan’s main campus is situated on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. The University of Saskatchewan is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a city with a diverse and thriving economic base, a vibrant arts community and a full range of leisure opportunities. The University has a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and scholarly activities and offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to a student population of over 26,000.

The successful candidate must hold an earned Ph. D. We are seeking candidates who demonstrate promise for excellence in research, teaching, graduate student supervision, securing competitive external research funding, and engaging in professional service and outreach. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in space radar research using Super DARN (Super Dual Auroral Radar Network) and show potential for leadership within the collaboration.

Our Department leads the Canadian Super DARN operation and chairs the international ten-nation Super DARN collaboration. Super DARN Canada operations are supported by the CFI MSI (Major Science Initiatives) program, making Super DARN Canada a national research facility. Super DARN Canada is also supported by the Canadian Space Agency and Innovation Saskatchewan. Super DARN enables theoretical and experimental research, as well as produces a rich dataset covering three solar cycles obtained by combining data from all Super DARN partners. The University of Saskatchewan is a founding partner in the Super DARN collaboration, dating back to the early 1990s. The Super DARN Canada research and engineering team is involved in system-level space science, ionospheric physics research, and leading-edge radar engineering design. In addition to its research activities, Super DARN Canada supports important experiential learning opportunities at the facility, including engineering capstone designs and student internships.

The Institute of Space and Atmospheric Science (ISAS), with its seven Physics & Engineering Physics faculty members, is the largest and most comprehensive Solar-Terrestrial Physics and Atmospheric Science Institute in Canada. Three space physics faculty in ISAS currently focus on magnetospheric and ionospheric remote sensing with radars, providing direct collaborative opportunities for the successful candidate. Collaborations with researchers specializing in lower layers of the atmosphere are possible here. Other collaborative opportunities exist through the University of Saskatchewan’s membership in the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), within the Global Institute for Water Security, and the School for Environment and Sustainability.

The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics is a diverse department of currently 22 faculty members (including one Fellow of Royal Society Canada, one Canada Research Chair, one Centennial Enhancement Chair and 10 professional engineers), and over 60 graduate students. The department has experimental and theoretical research strengths in Space and Atmospheric Studies, Plasma Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Material Science, and Subatomic Physics. The department is responsible for undergraduate programs in Physics (B.Sc.), an accredited Engineering Physics program (B.E.), supports an interdisciplinary program in Mathematical Physics (B.Sc.), and offers thesis-based M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduate programs in Physics. Holding P.Eng. licensure or eligibility to apply for licensure is an asset for a candidate.

The College of Arts & Science offers a dynamic combination of programs in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. The college has over 10,000 students and 300 faculty, including 10 Canada Research Chairs. It emphasizes student and faculty research, interdisciplinary programs, community outreach, and international opportunities. For more information on the College of Arts and Science, see https://artsandscience.usask.ca/.

We encourage individuals from equity-deserving groups, including women, members of racialized minorities, Indigenous persons, and persons with disabilities, to apply. Applications from Indigenous persons and women are especially encouraged. The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics is committed to excellence in research and recognizes that equity, diversity, and inclusion(EDI) are fundamental to this goal. Recruitment will be guided by the strong commitment of the University of Saskatchewan, the College of Arts and Science, and the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics to EDI.
