Type of temporary opportunity: Temporary s26 Transfer
Duration of opportunity: 6 months
Working arrangement: Full Time
Classification: APS 6 / Executive Level 1
Contact Officer: Nick Heaney, (02) 6202 3874
Closing Date: 11:30PM AEST, Sunday, 20 October 2024
What you will do
We are looking for a team member at the APS 6 or EL 1 level to help us deliver a capability review between November and April 2024 (a six-month secondment or temporary transfer). You can find out more about capability reviews by searching for “APSC capability reviews” on your browser of choice, or by searching on the APSC’s website.
Your day-to-day responsibilities would include qualitative and quantitative research and analysis, including summarising source documents; drafting chapters for the report; note-taking in interviews; running or helping to run staff workshops; and solving logistical, policy and other problems with others in your team, the reviewed agency, or senior reviewers.
Each review runs to a standard methodology, with tweaks to suit the preferences of senior reviewers and the context of the agency being reviewed. Reviews are run with a flat structure. We use collaboration tools and apply agile ways of working.
Between capability reviews, you would work with the rest of the team to improve our approach.
Skills and capability we need
To succeed in this role, you will need to write, think and communicate well. You should enjoy analysing data, writing, being organised and working collaboratively in a small team. You will also need to be discreet, comfortable with change and engaging with senior stakeholders, and good with detail.
What you will gain from the experience
We offer a rare opportunity to come to grips with how government agencies work. You will sit in on discussions with experienced APS and non-APS leaders talking about how organisations are run. You will hear directly from staff, senior leaders and others on capability and the challenges of leadership. Then you’ll help the senior reviewers craft a clear, actionable report so the agency you’re reviewing can best position themselves for their future.
About our team
The Capability Reviews team in Workforce Strategies Branch delivers a program of capability reviews of Commonwealth agencies. The review program is an exciting part of the government’s reform agenda. It aims to embed a culture of continuous improvement across the APS and ensure agencies can deliver government priorities and outcomes for Australians.
Capability reviews are independent, forward-looking and assess an agency's ability to meet future objectives and challenges. They aim to facilitate discussions around an organisation’s desired future state, highlight strengths and organisational capability gaps and identify opportunities to act on them. You can find out more information about the program by searching for “APSC capability reviews” on your browser of choice, or by searching on the APSC’s website.
The Capability Reviews team is split into three sub-teams – two review teams and a central coordination team. You will be part of a review team of four supporting a panel of eminent people to research and write a report on an agency’s capability. The review program is a pilot and we have a strong continuous improvement focus. We use a mix of traditional and human-centred research methods and draw on agile approaches for our project management.
