Primary objective
The position involves leading, supervising and supporting Court Staff regarding the delivery of effective, contemporary Court services,
with a focus on continuous improvement. The Court team works within a judicial framework and consults with a range of legal, law
enforcement, correctional and social service organisations and agencies. In addition the Registrar will be expected to assist the Principal
Registrar Local Court in the effective management of the activities of the Court.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead and supervise the Local Court Team. Provide expert advice and direction to the Court Staff team regarding the delivery of
effective, contemporary Local Court services.
2. Perform the statutory duties of a Registrar of the Local Court which include issue of court process, conducting Pre-Hearing
Conferences, Oral Examinations and Attachment of Earning Summons, processing of court orders and producing documents including
applications, orders, warrants and notices using the Integrated Justice Information System (IJIS) and other functions as an ex officio
Justice of the Peace.
3. Manage the Local Court services to ensure that court proceedings and other matters dealt with by the court are processed efficiently
and accurately.
4. Actively monitor operational budget and human resources to contribute to strategic direction and performance of the Katherine Local
court as a member of the Local Courts management group, and provide management support to the Principal Director Local Court as
required.
5. Manage the recording, archiving, movement and security of exhibits.
6. Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships and strategic alliances with colleagues and other stakeholders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Knowledge of the current court information systems and court management/practices that will translate into practical use as well as
sound comprehension of relevant legislation in all jurisdictions or the ability to acquire such knowledge.
2. Ability to work well under pressure, set priorities and meet deadlines, and provide a client-focussed service.
3. Proven ability to provide contemporary supervision and leadership.
4. Well-developed ability to plan, program and coordinate workloads with changing priorities, with high-level problem-solving skills and
ability to use initiative.
5. Highly developed communication, collaboration and negotiation skills with a demonstrated ability to work with people from culturally
diverse backgrounds.
6. Demonstrated high-level experience and knowledge of financial management practices and processes including working knowledge
of the Financial Management Act, in particular Trust Accounts and Receiver of Territory Monies Procedures.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in Law, Business, HRM, Accounting or other relevant discipline.
2. In-depth knowledge of the issues and challenges of working in the court system, together with the associated legislation and policy
frameworks.

effective administration of the court with administrative, legal and judicial duties.

1. Lead and supervise the Katherine Local Court team. Provide expert advice and direction to staff regarding the delivery of effective,
contemporary Local Court services.
2. Perform the statutory duties of a Registrar of the Local Court which include issuing court process, conducting Pre-Hearing
Conferences, Oral Examinations and Attachment of Earning Summons, issuing criminal and civil summons, conducting call overs,
processing of court orders and producing documents including applications, orders, warrants and notices using the Integrated Justice
Information System (IJIS) and other functions as an ex officio Justice of the Peace.
3. Manage Local Court services including circuit courts to ensure that court proceedings and other matters dealt with by the Court are
processed efficiently and accurately, taking initiative to continually strive for best practice in this regard.
4. Provide advice to senior managers about Service Delivery, HRM issues including recruitment and selection, conditions and benefits
and staff training and development. Including preparation and reporting on personnel and budget matters.
5. Assist with the preparation of Strategic and Business Plans, coordinate input and follow up to ensure timely completion.
6. Manage the recording, archiving, movement and security of exhibits, court files and financial records.
7. Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships and strategic alliances with colleagues and other stakeholders.
8. Provide management support to the Principal Director Local Court.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Knowledge of the current court information systems and court management/practices that will translate into practical use as well as
sound comprehension of relevant legislation in all jurisdictions or the ability to acquire such knowledge.

3. Demonstrated financial management, leadership and management experience.
4. Demonstrated experience in client and stakeholder management.
5. Highly developed oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
6. Well-developed cross-cultural awareness and the ability to relate appropriately to people from a wide range of socio-economic
backgrounds.
7. In-depth knowledge of the issues and challenges of working in the court system, together with the associated legislation and policy
frameworks.
8. Holds a Tertiary qualification in Law that facilitates eligibility as a practitioner, however described by the High Court of Australia or
the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
Desirable
1. Mediation or court advocacy experience in a Northern Territory context.
