Primary objective
Managing the day-to-day activities of the Criminal Registry and oversee training, development and performance of staff.
Support and assist the Judiciary through ensuring that the management of criminal and related proceedings is effective and
efficient.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage the Criminal Registry in Darwin including the supervision, recruitment and development of Registry staff.
2. Develop effective court management practices within the Local Court and work collaboratively with other Courts and
Tribunals managers on a broad range of initiatives affecting Courts and Tribunals.
3. Carry out the statutory functions of Registrar, including the issuing of process in accordance with relevant legislation,
regulations and Court rules.
4. Provide high level assistance and practical advice to staff, litigants, legal practitioners and other court clients.
5. Perform the statutory duties of a Justice of the Peace including swearing affidavits, certifying true copies and signing
warrants.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Possess a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to interact effectively with people
from diverse cultures.
2. Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of assistance and practical advice to executive personnel, court and agency
staff, litigants in person, legal practitioners and other court clients.
3. Demonstrated ability to manage staff and resources in a busy, high pressure and complex environment, whilst driving
significant change
4. Comprehensive computer literacy skills and knowledge of the current court information systems or the ability to acquire
such knowledge.
5. Demonstrated practical and structured approach to solving problems, improving systems and planning for future
requirements.
6. A comprehensive knowledge of court management practices and the structure of the judicial system in Australia and the
ability to interpret legislation or an ability to acquire such knowledge.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in related field or other relevant and current qualifications that have been used practically in the
workplace for the purpose of giving procedural advice.
