Primary objective

Actively contribute to the successful custodial placement and through care management of all prisoners through timely, accurate advice

and activities relating to the individual’s cultural responsibilities and cultural barriers to reintegration.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Implement and facilitate the delivery of cultural advice and service delivery that provides cultural support and welfare services to

remand and sentenced prisoners; including engagement with relevant community agencies / services.

2. Liaise and collaborate with departmental officers, other government agencies, and non-government organisations to provide relevant

Support Services and Welfare Assistance to prisoners.

3. Establish and maintain accurate statistical data collection and recording of the delivery of Support Services on the Integrated Offender

Management System consistent with Correctional Services policies and procedures for the management of prisoners.

4. Provide effective support and advocacy services to diverse cultural and language groups within the prison to ensure prisoners

understand and receive relevant services.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated high level of communication skills and ability to interact with people from diverse cultures; particularly Aboriginal

people from Northern Territory regions and communities.

2. Demonstrated ability to provide accurate and relevant cultural advice (cultural relationships, requirements and safety) to internal and

external staff.

3. Demonstrated high standard of organisational skills and knowledge of motivational interviewing, cultural mediation and conflict

resolution skills; documentation and reporting.

4. Demonstrated ability to actively engage and coordinate a range of service providers and other including: Elders, respected others;

and their families; and, non-government organisations and community based service providers.

5. Knowledge and experience in case management and the development of inter-agency responses to implement through care goals.

6. Knowledge of principles and theories relating to offender cycles of behaviour to identify barriers to reintegration and promote

community safety.

7. Current driver’s licence.

Desirable

1. Relevant qualifications in social welfare, Aboriginal studies or associated discipline.
