Primary objective

Use cultural expertise and local knowledge to assist probation and parole staff to support Aboriginal offenders and help offenders

Context Statement

Community Probation and Parole Officers (CPPOs) were introduced under the Closing the Gap initiative to provide localised

support and cultural guidance to probation and parole officers who supervise Aboriginal offenders. CPPOs ideally reside in remote

prison and ensure offenders are following court or parole conditions.

offenders.

2. Share relevant cultural knowledge and provide advice to probation and parole staff about working with Aboriginal people.

3. Assist offenders understand court or parole conditions they have agreed to and support them to stay away from trouble.

4. Talk to offenders, family and other stakeholders to gather information for Court and Parole Board; and share information on

community and family issues which may affect offenders returning to community and keep communities safe.

5. Keep Community Corrections staff up to date with community events and issues and improve cultural competence.

6. Assist with delivery of the Family Violence Program, Elders Visiting Program, bush courts, community courts, and Community

Work program.

7. Undertake drug and alcohol tests on offenders and connect electronic monitoring devices on offenders.

8. Where possible, ensure families of offenders and communities are not at risk and seek assistance from Police as required.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated cultural knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal people living in remote communities.

2. Good written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to maintain confidentiality.

3. Proven ability to work alone with minimal supervision.

4. Awareness of criminal justice system and the issues that affect remote Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal people.

5. Willingness to work flexible hours, travel in light aircraft and on unsealed roads by four-wheel drive vehicle.

Desirable

1. An ability to speak one or more Aboriginal languages of the region.

2. Ability to use MS Word and other computer systems, and to record data accurately.

3. Possess a current NT drivers’ licence.
