The Community Participation is part of our Client Support Services team, providing case work and clear pathways for community support and engagement. The role will support people seeking asylum through a range of programs, creating a welcoming space to provide real and practical support.
This role plays a significant part in identifying social and recreational supports available to people seeking asylum. The emphasis of this role is to coordinate and organise activities and establish pathways for people to access and participate socially within communities.
This is a part-time position, 3 days per week on an initial 12-month contract, with the possibility of extension. Flexibility to work hours across more than 3 days may be considered.
What will your role look like?
This active, dynamic position plays a significant role creating and fostering a welcoming and safe social environment. It takes the lead in the coordination and delivery of daily activities that support people to make social connections, and participate in recreational and learning opportunities.
The role aims to facilitate opportunities for culturally-appropriate connections and meaningful participation of people seeking asylum within the Australian community.
Some of the daily responsibilities of this role includes:
Together with people seeking asylum, identify social, cultural, educational and recreational opportunities that meet their needs and aspirations
Working with the Client Support Services team and community partners, creating pathways for social and recreational participation in a range of community settings
Coordinate a team of volunteers to deliver daily activities and events that support community connection, wellbeing and skill development, including but not limited to: English classes, excursions, Family Days, swimming lessons
Drive and deliver a program of daily Community Lunches at Newtown and Auburn that welcomes, connects and nourishes people seeking asylum
Recruit, onboard, and build a network of skilled volunteers in partnership with the Volunteer Manager
Actively support, develop and lead multiple teams of volunteers for optimal performance, engagement and retention
Identify participant needs and refer participants to other internal ASC services
Actively model community engagement principles and practices when delivering activities
Selection criteria
Essential
Experience directly engaging with, supporting, and enabling people with complex needs and/or people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
Proven ability to promote a positive, safe work culture and lead teams of volunteers
Excellent communication, interpersonal, written and oral skills
Exceptional attention to detail, organisational and time management skills
Ability to think innovatively, adapt to change and creatively solve problems
NSW Drivers Licence
Desirable
Lived experience as a refugee or person seeking asylum.
Tertiary qualifications in human services, social work, or other relevant discipline
Experience planning and delivering community events
Food safety qualifications or knowledge of NSW Food Safety requirements
Existing professional networks in the Inner West and/or Western Suburbs of Sydney will be highly regarded
Experience designing or implementing projects using Co-Design and/or Community Development principles
