About the team
The Production Team provides the skills and comprehensive engineering, electronics, IT, workshop fabrication and maintenance capabilities required for Questacon’s delivery of distinctive science and technology based interactive exhibitions.

The Exhibit Technology team is responsible for developing and maintenance of software, electronics and technology for Questacon’s interactive exhibitions. Close collaboration with design, concepts and other Questacon teams are a crucial part of the process.

The Exhibit Technology technician role is an exciting opportunity to work in a unique team and workshop environment, on many varied projects utilising a wide variety of skills and technologies, contributing to Questacon’s mission delivering high quality robust interactive systems for exhibitions.

Our ideal candidate
You will have:


  • Engineering or trade qualifications, relevant experience and technical knowledge in the Electronics field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining electronic devices and systems including wiring, soldering, construction techniques, use of hand tools and. knowledge of electronic components and circuits.
  • Demonstrated ability to find and resolve faults in electronic and electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with programming and application of microcontroller platforms such as Arduino.
  • Knowledge of current technology within the IT, Electronics and AV fields such as PC hardware, LCD monitors and large format display panels.
  • Ability to work independently, and closely as part of the production team in an environment with competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to develop new skills as required to meet the current requirements.
  • Demonstrated personal drive, integrity, professionalism and a proven commitment to APS Values, Code of Conduct and Work Health and Safety principles.
  • Possess a current driver’s license.

What you will do
Working primarily within the Production team and reporting to the Exhibit Technology team leader, duties will include:


  • Developing Questacon’s unique interactive exhibits using a wide range of technologies, devices and systems including micro controllers, video display technologies, Human interface devices, Sensors and many other electronic components. Supporting high level technical input and ensuring exhibition production and delivery is always of a high quality.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Team by working, training, and interacting with your colleagues, and by providing support to your Supervisors and Managers, as well as the staff across Questacon. Work within small development teams providing solutions and advice as required.
  • Provide maintenance and support services for Questacon exhibits as required to maintain high availability. Out of hours or weekend assistance may be required on occasion.
  • Develop prototypes for early concepts to demonstrate the operation of components for use in the interactive exhibits.
  • General assembly and production work including tasks such as wiring, soldering and component mounting.
  • Purchasing and procurement of parts, components and items as required for development and future maintenance.
  • Research technologies, techniques, products and systems as required to solve moderately complex problems.
  • Create and maintain relevant documentation as for future maintenance.
  • Maintain and support appropriate work standards within the production team including work health and safety, priorities and deadlines.

Eligibility
Prior to commencing, successful applicants will be required to:


  • Undergo a ‘Working with Children’ Police Check; and
  • Obtain or hold a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) ACT 2011.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes
The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles. Whilst we offer flexible working hours, it is a requirement to be available during workshop hours.

This vacancy is based from Questacon's Deakin (Canberra) office, although flexible or remote work arrangements may be considered. Please reach out to the contact officer to discuss this further.
