Primary objective
Provide technical advice and reports on the interpretation of the relevant legislation, National Construction Code and Australian
Standards with regards to specific building compliance issues to achieve a reasonable level of structural, fire, safety, health, and
amenity. Analyse data on the building records and prepare documentation to support the enforcement strategy for contraventions
of the Building Act and Regulations.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Support the Director of Building Control in the development and revision of Australian Standards, National Construction Code,
and relevant technical forums.
2. Contribute to the continuous review and development of policy and procedures, new services, and products as it affects
building control.
3. Conduct onsite inspections in order to assess potential non-compliance with the Building Act and Regulations, the National
Construction Code and associated standards.
4. Use technical experience and diverse resources to analyse information in order to review and prepare detailed technical reports
in response to potential non-compliance with the Building Act and Regulations, the National Construction Code and associated
standards.
5. Provide impartial and specialised technical advice on building control standards, certification compliance and Building Act and
Regulations to developers, industry, professionals, government departments, the general public and all relevant stakeholders.
6. Undertake assessment of applications under the Building Act and provide recommendations and analysis of issues for
consideration by the Director of Building Control.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent; or relevant experience in a field of technical work
closely related to the duties of the position.
2. Sound knowledge and understanding of building legislation processes and procedures, the National Construction Code and
associated standards.
3. Sound written and oral communication skill, including experience in preparing detailed technical advice and reports, and the
ability to apply these when dealing with diverse stakeholders.
4. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and flexibly as a team member and maintain positive collaborative working
relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
5. Sound organisational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to determine workload priorities with minimal
supervision in order to meet stringent deadlines.
6. Proficiency in the use of various computer software packages including Excel, Word, HP Records Manager (TRM) and ILIS or
similar.
7. Hold a current ‘C’ class NT Driver’s Licence or the ability to obtain a Driver’s Licence.
