The Opportunity


The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is seeking high-performing Assistant Directors across multiple sections of the Corporate Operations Branch (COB).

The Assistant Director, Accessibility Projects and Support, leads the coordination of the department’s role in the Set the Standard Report and the Dignified Access and User Experience of Parliament House Review. This role also supports broader departmental strategies and initiatives focused on culture and inclusion.

The Assistant Director, Parliamentary and Governance, ensures the department meets its parliamentary and corporate governance obligations. This includes managing the delivery of the Corporate Plan and Annual Report, parliamentary coordination, and stakeholder engagement.

The Assistant Director, Governance and Secretariat, oversees compliance with legislative and governance requirements, including parliamentary coordination, audit and risk management, and secretariat support for internal governance committees. This role also ensures effective records management and policy consistency within the section.

Job Specific Requirements:


  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 (Confidential/Highly Protected/Secret) or Baseline Vetting security clearance.

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Executive Level 1 classification - Assistant Director, Governance and Secretariat. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Monitor compliance with legislative and governance responsibilities managed by the Parliamentary and Governance section (the section). This includes parliamentary coordination, audit and risk management, Internal Audit, corporate publications, business continuity planning, risk and fraud and corruption requirements.


2. Perform secretariat responsibilities for various internal governance committees including developing and monitoring forward work programs and timelines, terms of references, agendas and preparation of meeting Minutes.



3. Ensure effective records management responsibilities of the section including action item registers to ensure effective and timely completion of items and appropriate records of decisions.



4. Maintain policies and procedures of the section by establishing and following a schedule, ensuring consistency and arranging appropriate consultation and clearance.



5. Build and maintain effective internal working relationships with stakeholders and attend relevant meetings and forums. Provide guidance and advice on governance responsibilities and meeting procedures and requirements.



6. Actively contribute to team culture and leadership to achieve quality and timely outcomes.

1. Support the Director Parliamentary and Governance to plan, develop and manage the delivery of the department’s corporate plan and annual report. This includes ensuring compliance with the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Rule 2014 (PGPA Rule) and parliamentary obligations.


2. Support the Director Parliamentary and Governance to manage and coordinate DPS’ parliamentary coordination responsibilities. This includes managing Senate Estimates timelines, quality assurance and drafting of briefs and responses to Questions on Notice and liaising with external stakeholders (including the Senate Committee Secretariat and President’s Office) to meet the necessary parliamentary obligations. As well as oversight of the Parliamentary Document Management System (PDMS).



3. Facilitate the department’s business planning process in accordance with the Corporate Plan, evaluate existing processes, and implement business process improvements.



4. Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and represent DPS at relevant meetings and forums. Provide relevant guidance, advice, and awareness training to internal stakeholders.



5. Provide direction and advice to support team members and actively contribute to team culture and leadership to achieve quality and timely outcomes.

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Executive Level 1 classification - Assistant Director, Accessibility Projects and Support. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Lead the coordination of the ongoing activities, initiatives and programs relating to the Set the Standard Report: Review into Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces and the Dignified Access and User Experience Review.


2. Collaborate on the development and implementation of the departmental strategic culture and inclusion strategies, programs, and initiatives. This will include understanding the department’s unique workforce needs now and into the future, understanding the broader landscape and anticipating workforce and culture-based challenges. It may include working through transformation activities and driving this work through an inclusion lens.



3. Coordinate and deliver departmental briefing papers, strategic plans, correspondence, and other collateral to senior stakeholders in a timely manner to ensure appropriate approval and reporting obligations are met.



4. Collaborate with the Office of the Secretary, the Executive, relevant areas of DPS and the broader Parliamentary Services, to devise and promote culture and inclusion experiences and initiatives.



5. Contribute towards Branch operational and strategic goals through internal and public facing communication, and evaluation activities.



6. Actively develop and maintain strong working relationships across the building and with external organisations as needed, including representing the branch and the department at various committees and working groups.



7. Provide high-level strategic advice, analysis, and support to DPS Senior Executive, including the preparation and review of relevant papers and complex correspondence.

Conditions of Employment

  • Australian citizenship – to be eligible for employment with DPS, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.


  • Security clearance and character clearance – the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.


  • Health assessment – a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.
