The Opportunity


The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Executive Level 1 Assistant Director, Electronic Resources within the Parliamentary Library. The Parliamentary Library provides high quality information, analysis and advice to Senators and Members of Parliament in support of their parliamentary and representational roles. This position sits within the Library Collections and Systems Branch, which develops and maintains the information resources that support the research needs of our researchers, and delivers news content for the current awareness of our parliamentary clients.

The Assistant Director, Electronic Resources will aid this work by overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of electronic resources and discovery platforms to ensure continuous access and up-to-date content, including managing the Electronic Resources and Cataloguing teams. They will support the full life cycle of electronic resources, provide knowledgeable advice in the review of licences, and ensure procured products are reliably discoverable. They will also build relationships in the Library to maintain an ongoing awareness of emerging needs and opportunities related to electronic resources.

The Electronic Resources team is also responsible for assisting clients with accessing and troubleshooting the Library’s news services accounts.

Job Specific Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in librarianship and/or information studies recognised by the Australian Library and Information Association.
  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Duty Statement


Classification: Parliamentary Executive Level 1
Branch: Library Collections and Systems
Section: Library Collections
Immediate supervisor: Director, Library Collections

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Executive Level 1 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee the day-to-day maintenance of electronic resources and discovery platforms to ensure continuous access and up-to-date content, including managing the Electronic Resources and Cataloguing teams.
  • Support the full life cycle of electronic resources including trials, subscriptions, budgeting, discovery, troubleshooting and cancellation.
  • Oversee the negotiation of license agreements and subscriptions, ensuring compliance and optimal access conditions.
  • Utilise a variety of tools to compile and maintain statistical data from a variety of sources with a focus on electronic resources to aid in collection development.
  • Develop and maintain data governance policies, procedures, and training documentation as needed.
  • Stay abreast of current trends and emerging technologies in electronic resources to enhance library services and resource accessibility.
  • Maintain relationships with teams throughout the Library to ensure an ongoing awareness of emerging needs and opportunities related to electronic resources.

Conditions of Employment


Employment opportunities at Department of Parliamentary Services are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:

  • Australian citizenship – to be eligible for employment with DPS, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.


  • Security clearance and character clearance – the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.


  • Health assessment – a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.
