The Opportunity
The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Service Level 4/5 Geospatial Assistant within the Library Research Branch.
The Parliamentary Library provides high quality information, analysis and advice to Senators and Members of Parliament in support of their parliamentary and representational roles.

Who we are looking for
We are looking for a person who is motivated, adaptable, a team player and able to provide high quality client service. In this role, you will respond to client requests which will include the preparation of customised maps, including election results maps, maps using Census of Population and Housing data (from the Australian Bureau of Statistics) plus other bespoke mapping requests.
Staff within the Library will be expected to participate in Section and corporate activities such as meetings, planning events, workshops and training. It will be an advantage for you to have an understanding of the parliamentary environment.
Our ideal candidate will:
1. Be well-informed, motivated, adaptable and able to provide excellent client service. Professionalism and sound judgement are essential, and you must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality in accordance with Library policies.
2. Have Intermediate-level understanding of spatial data formats, preferably in Map Info and be familiar with or, have the ability to learn the following: FME (Feature Manipulation Engine), Bing and other web mapping services.
3. Have good written, numerical, and oral communication skills and intermediate-level research, analytical and Excel skills.
4. Geospatial qualifications would be highly desirable and/or hands-on experience with Map Info Professional or similar software.
Job Specific Requirements
- The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Immediate supervisor: Director, Statistics and Mapping
Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Service Level 4/5 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Undertake less-complex geospatial research requests, including the identification, retrieval, analysis of spatial output and the creation of mapping products for parliamentary clients and internal stakeholders.

Assist in the development of section expertise and resources including geospatial data workflows and data management practices.

Assist with the Library’s spatial data warehouse that includes Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) election results data, Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census data and other thematic and special interest datasets.
- Contribute to corporate activities, including the provision of administrative and technical support to senior officers within the organisation.

Salary
Currently, the salary range for this position is $77,719 - $92,412 per annum.
Conditions of Employment
Employment opportunities at Department of Parliamentary Services are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:
- Australian citizenship – to be eligible for employment with DPS, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
- Security clearance and character clearance – the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
- Health assessment – a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.
