Canopy NWA exists to create a community where refugees are welcomed and equipped with all they need to build new lives. Canopy NWA was established in 2016 through a grassroots community initiative to become the only refugee resettlement agency in Northwest Arkansas. Through close collaboration with businesses, faith communities, public agencies, and service providers, Canopy welcomed its first resettled refugee family in 2016. Canopy is an affiliate of Global Refuge, formerly known as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services. Since that first family in 2016 Canopy has helped to resettle over 850 refugees in Northwest Arkansas. To align with the national goal of resettling up to 125,000 refugees in the year ahead, Canopy has the goal of resettling up to 250 individuals in FY2025. Our professional staff provides access to core services that lead to self-sufficiency, but we rely heavily on volunteer partnerships with our community to help our new neighbors feel fully at home. An essential part of our growth for fiscal year 2025 and beyond will be to build a robust, engaged community of volunteers throughout our service area. This VISTA position will work to build, promote, recruit, train, and support Canopy’s multiple volunteer services in Northwest Arkansas, including Canopy’s newest office in Siloam Springs. These volunteer services include transportation, moving, tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs. This position will also assist with supporting Canopy’s Circle of Welcome (formerly co-sponsor) teams, which walk alongside a new family for their first six months in the United States and serve as the family’s first friends. The VISTA will work with civic and faith groups, local businesses, and nonprofits, both in Siloam Springs and in Canopy’s established areas in Northwest Arkansas.
Member Duties : The VISTA will work to expand the volunteer base to serve as mentors and tutors to refugee clients. Additionally, recruitment efforts will aim to recruit transportation, home setup, childcare, and other volunteers. The VISTA will accomplish this through expanded recruitment, improved outreach materials, new community partnerships, and new connections with diverse partners interested in volunteer opportunities. In addition, the VISTA will strengthen the Circle of Welcome program that trains teams to provide invaluable support to newly arrived refugee families. The position will also work to develop a volunteer retention plan that will identify best practices for events and other efforts to retain volunteers and Circle teams. Finally, the VISTA will conduct evaluation efforts through volunteer exit surveys and focus groups.
