Description

Veterans Affairs Manager

Within the department of Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity (CRIO), the Veterans Affairs Manager will oversee programs and services that support veterans living in Detroit. This role is responsible for developing strategies to assist veterans in areas such as housing, employment, education, health, and overall well-being. The manager will work closely with government agencies, veteran organizations, and community partners to ensure veterans receive the support they need and to promote veteran inclusion in city programs.

Examples of Duties

  • Lead the design, implementation, and management of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for veterans in Detroit. Oversee veteran-related services such as housing, workforce development, healthcare access, and veteran-owned business support. Collaborate with other city departments and external organizations to address veterans' needs.
  • Foster relationships with local, state, and federal veteran service organizations. Coordinate events, workshops, and programs aimed at raising awareness of veteran resources. Engage with the veteran community to assess needs and provide feedback to improve city services.
  • Advocate for veteran issues and work on policy recommendations at the local level. Stay informed on federal and state policies that impact veterans and relay relevant information to city leadership.
  • Maintain data on veteran populations in Detroit, including demographics, homelessness, employment status, and veteran-owned businesses. Prepare regular reports for city leadership on program outcomes and areas for improvement.
  • Aid veterans seeking information or help with benefits, housing, employment, and other services. Act as a liaison between veterans and city resources, guiding them through available support programs.
  • Manage program budgets and ensure resources are allocated efficiently. Identify and apply for grants to support veteran services and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study. Certain positions may prefer, or require, a Master’s degree.

Seven (7) years of work related experience that includes four years of professional administrative experience directly related to the specified position, including line supervisory or team leader responsibility and authority.
