Position Title - Natural Resource Specialist Partner Organization - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Partner Website - www.fisheries.noaa.gov Project Location - 304 South Water St, Suite 201, Ellensburg, WA 98926 Service Dates - March 17, 2025, to January 23, 2026 (45 week, 1700-hour position) Position Summary - In partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute (MAI), NOAA Fisheries will sponsor a Vets Work Ameri Corps Intern to serve as a Natural Resource Specialist. The Intern will support the recovery of salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act. This position will work closely with the West Coast Region’s Columbia Basin Branch. The position will involve geospatial analysis, information compilation and data gaps, partner engagement, outreach, and various communications projects. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn about the science and policy of habitat restoration and salmon recovery; network and collaborate with agency, tribal, and nonprofit partners; and build a portfolio of outreach and communications products. The position will be approximately 90% office based, with occasional travel or field work opportunities (up to 10%). Benefits -

Vets Work is an apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Labor. Members with G.I. Bill benefits may be able to dual enroll as an apprentice and access their Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) of up to approximately $2,400 per month. Actual benefits vary by individuals’ qualified benefits.
Essential Functions - to include, but not limited to:
Create outreach materials for the public or technical audiences (presentations, posters, web stories, reports, etc.) to provide updated information on restoration techniques and projects, and the status of salmon and steelhead and their habitats to diverse audiences.
Create, revise, and maintain content to provide information to the public and target audiences about recovery, restoration and species status, including compiling recovery data, reports, monitoring results, maps, photos, and other permitting information.
Communicate with partners (counties, tribes, state, towns, recovery boards, non-profit, federal, etc.) to understand common objectives and priorities, educate them about NOAA's resources, and improve collaboration to facilitate salmonid recovery.
Collect, synthesize, analyze, and present data to help prioritize actions and locations for salmon and steelhead habitat restoration.
Provide technical assistance and information regarding habitat restoration projects, review assessments relating to projects, and provide comments and feedback to applicants and proponents on projects, as needed.
Use a general understanding of the regulatory laws, fish, other protected species biology, and aquatic habitat requirements, to perform various technical consultations.
Conduct fieldwork, building skills in field-based stream habitat assessment by participating in stream surveys with local partners, as available.
Support other tasks involving habitat restoration, environmental stewardship, and recovery of resources.
Position Requirements - to include, but not limited:
Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation when requested.
Ability to collect monitoring data in a variety of conditions, ranging from cold and wet to hot and humid weather. Comfortable working in and around water.
Occasional travel throughout the Columbia Basin to conduct fieldwork or participate in meetings.
Hours and weekend work may be required.
Desire to promote environmental stewardship.
Demonstrate independence, motivation and resourcefulness.
Communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with a wide spectrum of audiences.
Desire to work with diverse populations.
Skill working in a team environment, understanding roles and responsibilities of members, and providing communication and support to members of the team.
Must have served in the Uniformed Services of the United States, including Guard and Reserves and have a DD214 with an honorable discharge.
At least 21 years of age at beginning of service term.
U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
Ability to commit to the full 45-week term of service.
Selection, placement, and retention are contingent upon passing the National Sex Offender Public Registry, state of service and state of residence criminal history check, and a national FBI check.
Must follow all health and safety policies and procedures, including any changes that are implemented throughout the course of the program. Accepting a position means accepting the current requirements and any updates to those requirements while enrolled in the program.
