The Opportunity
WSDOT Bridge & Structures Office Regional Inspection Unit is currently seeking to fill a Bridge Engineer 6 position in Tumwater, WA. The position is responsible for supporting the bridge inspection program statewide, including scheduling, coordinating, equipping, and verifying the accurate and timely completion of all routine, fracture-critical, special, and short-span inspections following FHWA and WSDOT requirements for all WSDOT-owned bridges (approximately 3,600) and selected other state and local agency bridges inspected by negotiated agreement. This position supports WSDOT’s mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation by ensuring the safety and reliability of the bridges on the state highway system.
What to Expect
WSDOT is known for its bridge design and bridge inspection technical expertise. Our professional staff are motivated and trained to design the optimum solutions for the highly complex and challenging projects we deliver and to preserve our large and valuable inventory of existing bridges and structures.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Regional Bridge Inspector Supervisor will:
- Develop a master list of all bridges and tunnels for all the required inspection types in a calendar year, identify the required inspection equipment, and assignment of personnel to conduct the inspections.
- Work and communicate with WSDOT Bridge Maintenance crews of the various WSDOT regions for the scheduling of repair and/or maintenance work on structures.
- Coordinate and maintain the unit personnel’s workload balances, accommodate scheduled leave requests, and manage personnel actions.
- Manage the QC program for all structures inspected within the assigned Regional Inspection Work Unit.
- Review the completed bridge inspection reports, supporting materials, and percentage-based in-field operations review.
- Provide formal training to members of the work unit in all aspects of bridge inspection, including individual mentoring in both field and office environments.
- Maintain certifications and provide oversight of program safety requirements.
- Serve as a Senior Lead Bridge Inspector, including bridge program management functions, inspection planning and preparation, bridge inspection, inspection equipment operation, and inspection report preparation.
- Manage statewide bridge emergency phone on a 24/7 basis to provide emergency response services to the regions.
- Manage coordination of emergency response crews, communication of field findings, and implementation of actions to include temporary restrictions or closures.
- Operate equipment necessary to complete inspections (i.e. UBITs, boats, man lifts, hand-held power equipment).
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Registration in the State of Washington as a Professional Engineer (PE).
- The ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet, inside a confined space environment, and over waterways.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Four (4) years as a senior lead inspector or equivalent.
- Certification as a “Competent Person” for required preparation and review of fall protection programs and plans.

- This position requires a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of Washington. License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within three (3) months of appointment.
- Statewide overnight travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as-needed basis.
