Parks Worker I

Job Description Summary

Performs clean-up of public parks, splash pad, playground equipment, sports field and courts, minor landscape maintenance, repairs on equipment, sprinklers and turf maintenance.

The ideal candidate will be a motivated individual with great communication skills that thrives in a team environment. The ideal candidate will have previous professional landscape experience with knowledge of park maintenance. These skills will assist the department in achieving our operations plan and be a contributing part of a collaborative team that engages in safety and LEAN processes. Our team is currently looking for candidates to fill our day shift with the primary tasks of general cleaning and assisting with park and sports field reservations.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Essential Functions

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned.
  • Performs clean up duties by cleaning ramadas, playgrounds, patios and sidewalks; cleaning offices, recreation rooms, restrooms and locker rooms. Power washes graffiti on block walls and other areas including rights-of-way and retention areas.
  • Performs landscape maintenance duties by digging trenches and holes, planting, irrigating, cultivating, fertilizing, weeding, trimming and pruning; picking up leaves and litter, installing sod and performing irrigation renovation; installing and removing trash receptacles, picnic tables, benches and signs.
  • Maintains landscaping by mowing, line trimming, picking up debris, aerating, scalping and seeding turf, planting, trimming and removal of plant material. Sprays pesticides in parks and ROW; and removes downed trees in parks and ROW.

Requirements


  • Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
  • Experience: No experience required.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver's License
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read irrigation manuals, training guides, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals.
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Writing: This position requires the ability to complete work orders and general correspondence.
  • Managerial: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others but may provide advice/direction to an employee with less experience/skill or tenure.
  • Policy/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
  • Technical Skills: Limited Application - Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking is utilized.
  • Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate - Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information. The purpose of interactions is primarily the sharing of information.

12 Month Objectives

12 month objectives
  • Learn and adhere to City policies and safety procedures in accordance with the City guidelines, training and orientation for tools, equipment and vehicles
  • Become knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of irrigation maintenance systems in your assigned areas. To be proven by passing a field test administered by the Parks Foreman.
  • Complete training on operation of mowers and equipment. Learn how to operate all equipment safely and efficiently to reduce risk of injury to the operator, other staff and park patrons in accordance with the standard operating procedures
  • Adapt to a changing work schedule that may include working overtime and on weekends when necessary.
  • Actively participates in the Parks Safety Program. Attend all safety meetings in the first year.
  • Attend and participate in Parks & Recreation Department quarterly meetings.
  • Become familiar with the Parks Operations Plan as it pertains to your assigned areas.
  • Initiate some personal goals and objectives for your performance review.
