About Catawba Bend Preserve - Catawba Bend Preserve is a beautiful landscape that supports habitat for plants, migratory birds, and other wildlife. The master plan for the park, provides for the preservation of natural open space, Catawba Bend Preserve will become one of the largest public green spaces in York County and is currently closed for construction.

About our opportunity
We are excited to hire a full-time, non-exempt Park Ranger to join our team within the Parks and Recreation Department, Catawba Bend Preserve Park. The purpose of this position is to assist in planning parks and recreation programs and projects and in developing, coordinating, and overseeing park operations; to patrol County parks and enforce rules and regulations for the protection of the parks, visitors, and wildlife; to maintain a safe visitor and employee work environment; and to perform related administrative and supervisory work as required.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am -5:00 pm; occasional evenings and weekends depending on operational needs. Evenings, weekends, and holidays will be required when the park opens to the public in 2025.

Projected Salary Range: $20.20 - $25.25 per hour. Salary is dependent on experience and education.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules for seasonal staff; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Assists with camper and shelter reservations/cancellations; oversees park shelter reservation process; collects and records all revenue; maintains records of park attendance and permits issued.
  • Responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance, and complaints regarding department policies and programs, including explaining park rules and regulations to guests.
  • Controls Park access, including opening, closing, and monitoring traffic through the park gates.
  • Records, compiles, and maintains daily records of all fees and visitor information collected.
  • Performs general clerical duties as required, including but not limited to answering the telephone, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, and processing mail.
  • Performs retail operation of a park store, including the selling, stocking, and maintaining of proper inventory.
  • Patrols Park grounds and inspects facilities for security and safety, and takes appropriate steps to ensure the safety of all staff and citizens and the protection of County property.
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of park grounds and buildings, including but not limited to installing landscape materials, mowing grass, removing tree limbs and trees, raking/removal of debris, removing refuse and maintaining recycling procedures, painting structures and furnishings, performing carpentry work, performing custodial work, and performing basic electrical, plumbing, and HVAC maintenance and repair work. Additionally, responsible for the maintenance of sewer lift station.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment as needed.
  • May work in the gatehouse to relieve workers for breaks/absences.
  • Assists at times with traffic control.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

About you
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience with parks and recreation programming or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must possess CPR certification, First Aid Certification, BBP certification, AED Certification required.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
