JOB
Under the immediate supervision of the Director of Library or designee, this is an entry-level position that assists with shelving and organizing library materials, including books, journals, and multimedia items. This position provides clerical and administrative support assistance to the Librarians, Library Associates, and the Archivist in the efficient operation of the library performing routine or standard nonprofessional library work. Work is conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures, with regular reviews to ensure adherence to library standards.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Assists patrons in organizing library materials and information.Provides operational and technical support related to library and informational services, including clerical tasks such as answering the telephone and organizing files.Checks out and collects returned library materials for patrons at the circulation desk. Inspects incoming materials for damage.Maintains records regarding circulation, collections, and materials.Conducts manual and online reference searches.Assists senior library staff in giving tours and providing youth services.Provides assistance in planning and participating in special programs such as outreach, story time, and sign-up campaigns.Assists library visitors with borrowing books or paying library fees.Provides assistance with library services while in the bookmobile.Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITIONKnowledge of library objectives, functions, routines. and procedures.Knowledge of preparing bulletin boards and showcase exhibits.Skill in effective interpersonal communication.Skill in customer service.Skill in organizational and administrative work.Skill in computer operations and database systems.Ability to work with diverse groups and individuals to provide assistance within the library.Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Ability to operate various types of office equipment.Ability to maintain library records.Ability to set priorities for tasks.Ability to use judgement and initiative.Ability to work collaboratively as part of an experienced team, demonstrating a willingness to learn library processes.Ability to pay close attention to detail.FACTOR 2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLSSupervision is received from a Librarian or senior employee in the division. Work is performed under the guidance of a higher-level officer and is reviewed upon completion.FACTOR 3- GUIDELINESGuidelines include federal and local laws applicable to library science, departmental policies and procedures, rules and regulations, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITYWork is repetitive or routine in nature and follows standard procedures.FACTOR 5- SCOPE AND EFFECTThe purpose of the work is to provide clerical assistance within the library, including assisting librarians and other professional staff by checking library materials in and out, posting changes in manual or automated records and files, and shelving library materials while ensuring shelves are neat and organized.FACTOR 6- PERSONAL CONTACTSContacts are managers, co-workers, patrons, students, representatives of outside agencies, and the general public. Contacts are made in-person, email, or via telephone.FACTOR 7- PURPOSE OF CONTACTSContacts are made to provide library services to the public and to respond to requests for service or appropriate referrals in accordance with the objectives and mission of the library. Contacts with patrons are made to select, organize, and provide access to information suited to the needs of library services.FACTOR 8- PHYSICAL DEMANDSWork is primarily sedentary but involves pushing a cart, lifting and reaching for books, bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, standing, and carrying library materials.FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in a library facility, an air-conditioned bookmobile, or in a field environment. Some disagreeable conditions may be present while working in an open-air environment and while on the bookmobile. Some travel to off-site locations is required for outreach activities.
