Responsibilities
The Mayo Clinic Libraries are recruiting a flexible and collaborative individual who will work weekdays as a full-time, on-site Library Specialist I in the Medical Bookstore, which is physically located on the eleventh floor of the Plummer Building in Rochester, Minnesota.
Bookstore employees are part of the Libraries’ Technical Services work unit, which also manages acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, electronic resources, and processing of physical materials for sixteen Mayo Clinic library locations in four states. This position reports to the Head of Technical Services.
The successful applicant will work closely with another full-time Bookstore employee on all facets of bookstore operations, including staffing the bookstore’s service desk during browsing hours, handling customer service transactions via phone and email, interacting with publishers and other vendors to acquire books for customers, receiving and processing customers’ orders, maintaining financial records of the bookstore’s sales, and curating the bookstore’s physical inventory. This position will also assist with receiving, packaging, and mailing of bookstore materials. The successful applicant may also be called upon to assist other Technical Services and Access Services team members.
Applicants should have recent customer service and/or library experience, and possess a passion for customer service, a flexible mindset, keen attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve and improvise quickly and effectively.

Under supervision, the Library Specialist I will participate in multiple public, archival, or complex technical services responsibilities to serve library patrons and colleagues, using advanced skills. Coordinates tasks related to specialized aspects of the library/archive; interprets, develops and implements improvements in policies and work flow; assists patrons in the use of advanced library resources and handles complex requests; has achieved mastery (including problem-solving and development) of multiple advanced technological applications; mentors and trains other library/archive staff; creates procedure manuals and staff documentation; recommends materials for library collections; serves as a liaison between library units and vendors, publishers, suppliers and other libraries; demonstrates skills with financial functions, depending on library setting; and provides assistance to supervisor. Works independently when scheduled for evenings/weekends, depending on library site. May be responsible for a library facility, including opening/closing tasks, and emergency or security-related situations.
Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree with three years of work experience in a library, archivist, museum, or customer service environment
Note: Experience, in lieu of education, may be considered if the combination of undergraduate education and experience working in a library, archives, museum, or customer service environment is equivalent to seven years.
Experience in leading others by example and taking on additionally progressive responsibilities, such as serving on special work groups or departmental task forces and participating in continuing education opportunities. Employment experience in a medical library, archives, museum, or similar customer service environment. Employment experience working in a health care setting.
