Library Page

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Library Page performs manual and clerical duties in the library to include being responsible for shelving books in either alphabetical or numerical order, replacing misplaced books, and performing other related tasks such as organizing library collection materials to prepare the library for residents’ use.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Sorts, shelves, and files various library materials accurately according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, alphanumeric).
  • Reads shelves for accuracy and re-shelves misplaced items.
  • Sorts incoming materials for holds.
  • Maintains an attractive and functional public area.
  • Assists the public with basic circulation functions such as lending material or registering new accounts.
  • Locates and retrieves library materials from public and non-public areas for library staff or library users.
  • Checks in library materials using the computerized library system.
  • Answers in-person inquiries, helps library users locate needed materials and refers users to other appropriate assistance.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Preferred Entrance Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age or older.
  • Must be enrolled in one of the last two years of high school or have graduated from high school.
Competencies for Successful Performance of Job Duties
Knowledge of:
  • Modern library principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Basic library reference materials and procedures.
  • Local reader interests, books and authors.
  • Alphanumeric sequencing skills: the ability to quickly and accurately alphabetize, sort, and count.
  • Customer Service: Considerable understanding of principles and processes for providing great customer service.
  • Library Trends: Current knowledge of the principles, trends, and best practices of library science. Awareness of library related resources, databases, and networks including integrated library systems, bibliographic information, and cataloging rules.
Skill in:
  • Operating a computer keyboard, various library equipment, and/or office equipment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Basic Library Functions: must possess a basic understanding of the library's operations, purpose, and role in the community.
  • Computer Basics: working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and general software knowledge (e.g., Microsoft Word, Internet, email).
  • Working with sensitivity and tact.
Ability to:
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, library members and the community.
  • Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks such as sorting books.
  • Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements, including lifting books o a continuous basis for up to an hour at a time.
  • Lift arm above shoulder level.
  • Bend or stoop continually over time.
  • Move objects weighing up to 35 pounds regularly.
  • Reach overhead to shelve books weighing up to three pounds.
  • Bend and kneel to reach books on a bottom floor-level shelf.
  • Be comfortable working in close proximity with all age categories.
