Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Landscape Manager to join our team.
The position requires in-depth knowledge of tree planting and pruning and the ability to operate equipment including utility trucks, sprayers, tractors, chain saws, weed eaters, hand tools and other types of departmental equipment. This manager should possess effective communication, organizational and technical skills. The manager’s job is to ensure that the grounds, including trees and plants are kept in the best possible condition as is expected of a luxury hotel. The position also oversees the beach area ensuring the sand is raked and seaweed removed, ensuring a pristine environment for the enjoyment of guests Essential Job Functions:
Manages, supervises and oversees the day-to-day maintenance of the grounds and plans, organizes, oversees and coordinates the workflow and operating efficiency of the department ' s work crew.
Applies or supervises the application of fertilizers and pesticides to plants and shrubs on the property as needed.
Monitors and assists in the installation and maintenance of drip irrigation.
Ensures that the grounds maintenance area and equipment are kept clean, well-organized and hazard free.
Operates and or supervises the operation of the department' s equipment including all tools and ensures all parts, machinery and related equipment are maintained in an excellent state of repair.
Daily inspection of the grounds to ensure highest standards are being maintained; ex/ replacing dead or tired looking plants; keeping areas free of weeds and pests etc; pruning trees as needed; removal of dead trees or trees the roots of which pose a hazard to nearby buildings.
Staff Management including:
Oversee the supervision of personnel, including work allocation organization and prioritization.
Deal with complaints and differences and coach employees how to resolve and de-escalate conflicts.
Instill a calm, organized approach in all situations.
Evaluate performances and make recommendations for personnel actions
Train and coach supervisors and other employees in leadership skills and exemplary conduct and performance
Motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance
Create a courteous, friendly, professional work environment.
Introduce ongoing staff training to ensure exemplary staff attitude and job performance at all times
Create timetables for completion of special work projects and follow through to conclusion
Introduce an inspection program involving staff to ensure equipment is consistently maintained and in proper repair and working order.
General functions include:
Remain cost conscious as regards all expenses including tools and equipment purchases, staff payroll and all other costs which apply to the department.
Establish and maintain an inventory of tools and equipment and distribute to staff as needed and carry out spot checks periodically to ensure equipment is being well maintained.
Develop, plan and implement short-and-long range goals for continuing improvement of the grounds and the skills of the workers.
Ensure staff trained in the safe and proper handling of all chemicals and that safety standards are maintained.
Ensure that only employees with valid drivers, licenses operate machinery.
Ensure OSHA policies are adhered to.
Any other duties assigned by the Hotel’s General Manager.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required.
Experience: At least three years successful experience in managing outdoor work crews that perform multiple tasks is required. Experience with the methods, materials, and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and trimming a variety of types of trees, shrubs, plants, ground cover, and grasses is preferred. Experience in the proper use, control, storage, and disposal of pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and similar chemicals is required.
Skills: Supervisory and administrative skills are required. Computer literacy is required. Must be able to coordinate multiple tasks, prioritize work, plan, and propose recommendations for change. Must be able to develop, update, and monitor grounds maintenance, and preventive maintenance plans. A knowledge of landscaping, irrigation techniques, floriculture, and ornamental and turf management is required. Knowledge of the federal and state regulations governing the use, control, storage, and disposal of pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and similar chemicals is required. Must be able to delegate responsibilities, develop an effective work force, promote teamwork, and provide daily direction to the workforce based upon policy guidelines. Budget management, inventory control, and equipment management skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Effort: The ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds is required. The ability to operate push and riding power mowers, chain saws, commercial tractors, and similar grounds maintenance equipment is required. The ability to climb ladders, up to 15 feet, is required.
A valid USVI driver’s license is required.
Must be and remain clean shaven and pass a respirator medical exam and fit test.
