Position Description
GROUNDS MAINTAINER
CLASSIFICATION: Labor and Trades LOCATION: Public Works
GRADE: LT-2
General Purpose: Performs all types of manual labor related to road and grounds maintenance and any other duties, as assigned by the Director of Public Works or his designee.
Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Grounds Leadman, Groundskeeper, Director and Assistant Director of Public Works, or their designee.
Supervision Exercised: May supervise another laborer or seasonal help.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Mows and trims grass at Municipal buildings, schools, and parks. Executes the following maintenance duties: athletic field preparation and striping, cutting and disposal of brush, garden bed upkeep, and other general grounds maintenance operations. Loads, unloads, and transports equipment. May assist Highway/Building Maintenance in road and building maintenance operations. Will assist in snow removal operations. Performs any other simple tasks assigned by the Director and Assistant Director of Public Works or their designee.
Desired Minimum Qualifications: High School or GED diploma required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of materials, such as hot patch, stone, highway posts and snow fencing. Skills in the operation of various manual equipment, including, but not limited to, shovels, brushes, picks, rakes, cutters, and assorted hand tools. Also skilled in the operation of chainsaws, weedwhackers, mowers, portable generators, and snow blowers. Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
As a minimum, the employee must have a valid State of Connecticut drivers’ license, CDL Class A license preferred, and be able to drive a standard transmission truck. The employee is subject to the FHWA drug/alcohol testing policy of the Town of North Branford.
Experience and Training: 1-3 years of recent experience and training in the areas of construction and/or grounds maintenance.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is required to lift, walk, drive, push and pull, reach overhead, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb, sit, and talk. The employee must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds. The employee must be capable of driving a 26,000-pound standard transmission GVW truck with plow, as well as smaller trucks. Specific vision abilities require close and distant vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, which are often adverse, both in the cold and heat. The employee will be required to work in storm conditions, rain, snow, sleet, and other conditions that may be present in New England. The employee frequently works near and around heavy equipment, trucks, and maintenance equipment.
