Assistant Teacher, Children’s People Empowering People

Program Overview
Offered in Spanish, People Empowering People Communities (PEP), is 10-week program for adults that
emphasizes the connection between individuals and community action. The curriculum focuses on values,
communication, life skills, problem-solving, parenting, and developing leadership skills. Dinner is provided
to program participants.
Children’s People Empowering People (CPEP) was developed to be a parallel course to PEP for children
of participants in the PEP program. It is an organic bridge for parents and children to share the course
experience, session by session. PEP aims to enrich the power of children ages 5-12 to assume leadership
roles in order to foster community action. The literacy-based curriculum includes a full spectrum of
activities to parallel the PEP course. Each week, children go home with a free book to build their home
library and reinforce what was learned in class with their parents. CPEP is offered in English.
Position Summary
The Assistant Teacher will assist the Lead Teacher with developmentally appropriate activities for a mixed
aged group of children and support a physically and emotionally safe environment that nurtures and
facilitates the development of both children and families. The Assistant Teacher helps to facilitate class in
a virtual setting, including breakout rooms.
Virtual CPEP classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm-7:30pm and in-person classes will be
held four times on Thursday evenings from 5:30pm-8pm (dinner is served at 5:30pm).
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Lead Teacher with administrative tasks such as attendance, set up and clean up of
supplies.
  • Engage and interact with children to support learning experiences and encourages students to
think independently and critically, and to express original ideas.
  • Work with small groups of students, following the Lead Teacher’s lesson plans, via in-person or
Zoom breakout rooms.
  • Assist with four (4) classes in-person for 2.5 hours.
  • Assist with 6 classes via Zoom for 1.5-2 hours on Tuesday evenings.
  • Assist with a graduation event for children.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Must be age 16+.

  • Experience working with youth in some capacity.
  • Self-starter, ability to work independently
  • Dynamic personality with an ability and willingness to collaborate.
  • Passion for supporting youth and underrepresented populations of the community.
  • Strong communication and organization skills.
  • Proficient with Zoom.
  • Bilingual: English/ Spanish, written/oral (Preferred)
