If the land is well, if the sea is well, the people will thrive. The opportunity awaits… Our Māori Relationships team is growing and with this growth has come a fantastic leadership opportunity. This role will lead a small team of Kaiāwhina Kaupapa Māori, offering support and leadership to ensure successful relationships and networks with iwi, hapū and whānau. This role is pivotal in building and maintaining a high-trust relationship between the council and tangata whenua, ensuring effective engagement and meaningful participation in council activities. You will uphold and acknowledge iwi, hapū, and whānau matauranga tuku iho in accordance with te ao Māori, including manaakitanga, mana motuhake, and kaitiakitanga. Additionally, you will ensure that knowledge about local issues pertaining to Māori, including iwi dynamics, Treaty settlement status, and the iwi political landscape, is available to shape the council’s plans, operational activities, and engagement with tangata whenua. Do you have what it takes? We need someone who will provide strong leadership skills and has proven success at building relationships with internal and external stakeholders. In addition, you will bring the following:
Tertiary qualification and/or significant experience relevant to the functions of the position.
Demonstrated management level decision-making, planning and motivation skills.
Communicates clearly and with empathy in a range of cultural and social contexts.
Sound understanding of tikanga Māori and, ideally, ability to converse in Te Reo Māori.
Confidence and experience communicating and engaging on marae and with communities
Knowledge history of Aotearoa New Zealand and an understanding and appreciation of the place of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi in national and regional affairs.
A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the complexity of tāngata whenua issues and challenges, particularly in regard to Te Taitokerau.
Local government experience or understanding of local government operations.
