Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role
The Science Group undertakes environmental monitoring, data insights and data integrity, and provides research and advice to internal and external customers. The Science Group plays a key role in informing decision making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.
Reporting to the Manager - Environmental Monitoring, this role will lead a team in the robust collection, processing and management of groundwater and air quality data to support environmental management in Canterbury.
As a technical people leader, you’ll bring a combination of the following:
  • An excellent knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques, instruments and equipment.
  • A thorough understanding of data processing and quality assurance methods.
  • Experience planning and delivering monitoring networks and programmes.
  • Ensuring data collection and quality assurance methods are in line with relevant national and international standards. Participate in the development of national standards.
  • Ensuring advice, communications and enquiries on groundwater and air quality monitoring matters are managed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintaining an overview of workload to ensure resources are effectively assigned and sufficient to deliver on agreed programmes of work.
  • Experience in managing budgets, e.g. project budgets and the delivery of work to budget.
  • Ensuring the ongoing development and growth of kaimahi capability by leading and developing your people.
  • Commitment to and an understanding of te ao Māori, awareness of the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, together with experience of applying this in a workplace setting.
  • Understanding of the Resource Management Act requirements in relation to groundwater and air quality, including obligations on Regional Councils.
From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside of normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.


Based at our Kainga depot near Christchurch, the indicative annual salary range is $93000 - $102000 for a 40-hour week, Monday to Friday inclusive.


Mōu About You
As a competent leader of people, you’ll bring a thorough technical understanding of data collection, data processing and quality assurance procedures related to environmental data, along with demonstrated experience in leading a team over the scope of operational planning, resource allocation, and coordination of people and resources.
You’ll ideally bring a combination of the following:
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and setting up environmental monitoring field work, plus resolving issues that occur in the field including designing and leading monitoring programmes addressing groundwater and air quality problems.
  • A degree or diploma in a relevant field, with at least 7 years professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Full class 1 drivers licence.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team over the scope of operational planning, resource allocation, and coordination of people and resources.
