Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role
The work of the Science Group at Environment Canterbury consists of providing: environmental monitoring and data; and research and advice to internal and external customers. The Science Group plays a key role in informing decision making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.
Reporting to the Manager – Environmental Data, this newly created role will lead a team to ensure environmental data collected are of high quality, available and fit for purpose.
As a people leader you’ll lead, coach, mentor, and develop direct reports, while supporting them to create a high performing and engaged workforce, creating a clear vision, direction, and priorities, harnessing the energy, commitment, and creativity of direct reports to deliver business outcomes.
You’ll bring skills and experience in the following areas:
  • Service improvement of processes, systems improvements, standards and templates.
  • Procure, manage and negotiate service contracts and deliverables.
  • As the environmental domain data owner, you’ll be responsible for decision-making over data access, security, and usage for environmental data.
  • Ensuring that environmental data collected, and/or stored by Environment Canterbury are accurate, accessible and fit for purpose considering a variety of end users.
  • Manage workload and resources ensuring delivery of programmes of work.
  • Develop and maintain strategies, annual plans and work programmes to deliver a fit for purpose function.
From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.

The indicative annual salary range is $114000-$126000 per annum. This is a 40 hour a week position. Hours will be worked Monday to Friday inclusive. The location is 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch.


Mōu About You
Whilst you have a strong technical capability, you’re a natural connector or people and comfortable to collaborate with leaders and kaimahi to ensure alignment of projects, policies, processes, and systems to deliver the best results.
You’ll bring skills and experience in the following:
  • A MSc degree (preferred) or a BSc degree in a relevant environmental science field with significant data analysis.
  • Five years professional experience in data analysis work with a Master’s degree, or 10 years professional experience in data analysis work with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in: data governance; good data practices, working with scientific data, including quality coding of environmental data and familiarity with National Environmental Monitoring Standards (NEMS).
  • Understanding of the Resource Management Act requirements in relation to environmental data quality assurance including obligations on Regional Councils
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and proficiency in Python or similar would be advantageous.
  • Quality assurance methods and experience with automating quality control of large datasets across different environmental science disciplines.
  • Experience leading teams and budgets including planning, resource allocation, and coordination of resources.
  • Commitment to and an understanding of te ao Māori, awareness of the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, together with experience of applying this in a workplace setting.
  • Membership and active participation in industry networks and special interest groups related to environmental data quality assurance, including national data quality standards.
