ABOUT INUVIALUIT REGIONAL CORPORATION (IRC)

IRC was created in 1984 to represent the Inuvialuit and their rights and benefits obtained under one of Canada's oldest comprehensive land claim agreements. With assets over $1 billion, not including vast land holdings, IRC is responsible for corporate investment, land management, and a broad range of social, cultural, and economic programs and services benefiting Inuvialuit. Its subsidiaries have interests in grocery, manufacturing, property management, transportation, and significant dealings in the oil and gas industry.

Since its inception, IRC has experienced considerable growth and its structure and operations have become increasingly complex. Combining local government and service delivery, community development, investment, and operating business divisions, all managed by a single back office, the organization has an array of complexities for the executive staff to navigate. There is an emphasis on fostering understanding, healing, and resilience in a region brimming with unique social challenges and immense potential for transformative change.

JOB SUMMARY

Within Canada, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR) is experiencing tremendous environmental change due to an 8C increase in annual average temperature over the last 100 years. This increase has equated to several changes, including decreased ice conditions, shifting seasonality, unpredictable species migration/distribution and sudden onset of major storm events. Additionally, climate models have projected the accelerated increase in average annual temperatures to continue at an exponential rate.

In recognition of the overarching and increasing influence of climate change on almost every aspect of life in Inuvialuit communities, the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) aims to draw on the expertise of the Climate Change Program Coordinator to address not only the environmental aspects of climate change issues but also the interconnected health, socio-economic, cultural, and safety aspects of climate change impacts and adaptations.

Under the direction of the Research Administration and Programs Manager, the Climate Change Program Coordinator will address short- and long-term climate programming needs by supporting regional/community climate change priorities and administering climate change projects in the ISR.

The Climate Change Program Coordinator will solicit community feedback, represent Inuvialuit interests on various boards/committees, and ensure that future ISR programming includes IRC's long-term vision for climate services in alignment with the ISR Climate Change Strategy (and associated implementation plan).
