The SEWB Aftercare Worker (HP3) is a key role dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in East Arnhem by improving access to culturally safe and responsive suicide prevention services. This role focuses on building strong community partnerships, delivering co-designed aftercare services, and providing timely follow-up for individuals after a suicide crisis. By working closely with local communities and using culturally grounded models of care, the Aftercare Worker ensures that individuals receive culturally appropriate support for mental health and suicide prevention. Additionally, the role involves participating in monitoring and evaluation activities to improve service delivery outcomes.
The SEWB Aftercare Worker (HP4) plays a vital role in leading and implementing culturally safe suicide prevention programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in East Arnhem. This position involves conducting complex suicide risk assessments, crisis interventions, and case management for at-risk individuals, while also mentoring junior staff and collaborating with regional health providers to ensure coordinated care. The Aftercare Worker engages in policy advocacy and systemic improvements in suicide prevention, fostering strong partnerships with local communities to deliver culturally tailored aftercare services. Additionally, the role includes monitoring and evaluation activities to align with national care models and ensure effective service delivery.

Miwatj Health is an independent Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service. Established in 1992, we’re committed to securing quality health care services across the East Arnhem and enabling Yolŋu powered community health and wellbeing. Miwatj provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care to over 6,000 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents across 3 East Arnhem wards. With a Head Office in Nhulunbuy, Miwatj also manages a Corporate Office in Darwin, 7 fixed clinics across the East Arnhem region, and dedicated outreach teams who travel to 3 additional locations.
Essential Requirements
HP3
Candidates for this role must have a strong understanding of Aboriginal Community Control and self-determination, along with a deep appreciation of the challenges faced by Yolngu people in remote settings. A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related qualification, paired with significant experience in mental health, is essential. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in delivering innovative suicide prevention interventions and possess high-level skills in client engagement, communication, and problem-solving. Experience in crisis response and community facilitation, particularly within First Nations contexts, is crucial. Desirable qualifications include registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers and proficiency in an Aboriginal language from East Arnhem Land.
HP4
Candidates must demonstrate a deep commitment to Aboriginal Community Control and self-determination, along with an understanding of the unique challenges faced by Yolngu people in remote settings. A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related qualification, with extensive experience in mental health, is required. Candidates should have significant experience in developing and delivering suicide prevention programs, with expertise in trauma-informed care, risk assessments, crisis management, and ethical practice. Strong skills in policy development, community engagement, and program evaluation are essential. Desirable qualifications include registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers, a First Aid Certificate, and the ability to speak or understand an Aboriginal language from East Arnhem Land.
