Life at Mission Australia
When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we stand together with anyone who needs us, for as long as they need us.
Your Opportunity
Loneliness is increasingly recognised as having a strong negative impact on mental health. Many people are more isolated in the evening and on weekends, yet most mental health programs run during the day.
Connections is a vital program in the Broken Hill community supporting people living with mental illness. Connections runs Thursday to Saturday evenings plus every second Sunday. A coffee group is also held on Monday mornings. The program creates safe regular out-of-hours opportunities to build connection reducing social isolation for people.
Connections is staffed entirely by a team of peer support workers. Our Peer Support Workers all have their own experience and recovery in mental ill health and share this recovery with our clients.
You will help by:
  • Making that initial contact with clients.
  • Engaging participants and developing trusting and professional relationships.
  • Learning about each participant’s interests and their relationships with their family and friends in order to create a tailored approach to build these connections.
  • Providing emotional support to the participants by harnessing your own lived experience.
  • Helping connect the participants to meaningful activities and networks to keep them engaged.
  • Co-facilitating and collaborating in planning peer-based groups.
  • Ensuring documentation is completed and updated in line with Mission Australia protocols.
Does this sound like you?
  • You have personal lived experience of mental ill health and recovery.
  • You take time to listen and get to know people and find common ground with ease.
  • People open up and tell you things. You actively listen without judgement.
  • You know the right story to tell to inspire hope.
  • You understand self-care is important to help others.
  • You have a qualification in Mental Health or the willingness to work towards obtaining Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work
  • You have a current NSW driver's licence.
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check- qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
Please note that disclosing convictions will not automatically preclude you from our recruitment process.

Our innovative and inclusive culture will ensure you feel valued at Mission Australia as you help Australians in need and develop in your career.
We prioritize the safety and wellbeing of everyone, both within our team and the individuals we serve.
We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive working environment.
