Primary objective

This role offers valuable exposure to the breadth of work across the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services (NTPFES) and its strategic

position within the NT Government (NTG) and the national law enforcement and emergency management landscape. Media and

Communications Officers work independently with business areas to establish communication priorities in support of the NTPFES’

strategic and operational needs.

Context statement

This is a central role in the media unit, responsible for the provision of accurate and timely information through a variety of media

platforms to deliver the highest quality information to the community. This position operates in a fast paced environment, dealing with

challenging and sensitive topics, in conjunction with frequently changing deadlines and priorities.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Respond to media enquiries, and prepare and disseminate accurate information to the public via media releases and social media

platforms, including public information messaging during crisis management situations.

2. Attend major incidents and coordinate the release of information approved by the relevant incident controller.

3. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to gather information, draft materials and gain approvals, particularly on

sensitive and complex matters.

4. Develop proactive media strategies to meet operational and corporate information needs.

5. Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and journalists.

6. Undertake media related administrative functions such as coordinating press conferences, media monitoring and media training

for internal staff across the agency.

7. Support team leaders in day-to-day management of team resources, including working on rostered ‘on-call’ basis.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. A strong understanding of local media requirements and emerging trends in social media.

2. Experience crafting media materials using exemplary communications and creative writing skills.

3. Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

4. Proven ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

5. Ability to work outside of normal hours including ‘on-call’ support when required.

6. Proven political sensitivity, awareness and astuteness with high levels of integrity, discretion and confidentially.

Desirable

1. Good understanding of the Territory political, cross-cultural and media environment, and understanding of the tri-service’s strategic

priorities and functions.

2. Experience in coordinating media conferences and dealing with emergency situations.

3. Accreditation in Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS).
