The Correctional Supervisor, Dog Squad will manage the daily operations of the Centre's Dog Squad in accordance with Queensland Corrective Services policies and procedures and to enhance the static security to the Centre by providing a timely response to any emergency situation or breach of security and to provide specialised assistance in the security and control of offenders.
In this role you will:
- Lead the operation of the Correctional Centre Dog Squad, maintaining the control of departmental security equipment, dog hygiene, health, welfare and safe kenneling of any dog owned by QCS ensuring they are only used for official QCS purposes.
- Maintain in safe working condition any weapon, equipment and vehicle issued by QCS.
- Maintain strict control of all issued security equipment issued including equipment in one's area of responsibility.
- Provide reports concerning equipment damage, defects or loss and maintain accurate administration records.
- Maintain accurate record of all veterinary treatment, inoculations, medication, worming programs and any other medical information pertaining to allocated CS Dog in 'Corrective Services Dog Record of Service' booklet.
- Maintain specialist security function for the centre through the effective management of the dog squad team.
- Lead and manage team through: Taking part in crisis prevention and control activities, undertaking drug detection/ deterrence responsibilities, conducting special searches, assisting in Home Detention revocations
- Immediate response to crisis or emergency situations.
- Assess and evaluate the performance of Dog Squad personnel and implement appropriate staff development activities.
- Assist with the development of operational procedures relevant to the requirements of the dog squad for the centre.
- Manage and monitor monthly expenditure in accordance with budget forecasts for the year.
- Assist with activities and public relations exercises as required and document records accordingly.
- Participation in individual/group training sessions as arranged by the relevant Manager, and/or State Dog Squad
- Co-ordinator.
- Maintain mandatory operator qualifications for control and restraint, weapons and chemical agents.
- Maintain training proficiency of allocated QCS Dog and successfully requalify; and undertake training when required.
- Ensure the security and confidentiality of QCS property and information.
- Work in a 24 X 7 environment and provide a timely response to any emergency or breach of security.
- Provide specialised assistance in the security and control of offenders.
- Provide first line escape response.
- Perform maximum security and high-risk offender escort duties and perform foot and mobile patrols of QCS facilities.
- Actively enforce the Agency's drug strategy by detecting and deterring trafficking of drugs and contraband.
- Participate in special operations in conjunction with other security branches of QCS and Police and other Government law enforcement agencies.
- Perform duties as required by the General Manager.
- Develop productive working relationships with staff, management, professionals, Police and other agencies.
- Prepare and submit accurate incident reports/statements/records concerning notifiable incidents relating to Dog Squad activities.
- Perform surveillance to identify and respond appropriately to potential security risks and illegal activity.
- Ensure personal conduct is highly professional and appearance conforms to official dog squad uniform standards at all times.
- Enforce compliance of relevant QCS policy, procedures and legislation.
- Erect an Agency issue kennel/compound at handler's residence for the purpose of securing a Corrective Services Dog.
